any dentists around? tooth extraction question

hairymclary · 30/09/2006 19:40

I had a tooth removed on Wednesday and I am still having to take painkillers every 2 hours (paracetamol and nurofen)
I had one out before and I am sure it didn't hurt this much for this long. Is it normal? when will I feel ok again?

Not a dentist but I had to have a wisdom tooth removed last Wednesday and apart from taking a couple a paracetamol once the anaesthetic wore off, I've been fine. It doesn't sound normal to be still in pain. Have you phoned your dentist or the dental nurse. They might want to check it out

LadyTophamHatt · 01/10/2006 08:51

not a dentist either but when ever I've had teeth out it hasn't hurt for this long.

(oxocube, were your wisdom teeth top or bottom? I had mine out earlier this yr and it was absolutle HELL. I had one top, one bottom done atthe same time and felt and looked like I'dbeen beaten up for about 10 days)

pucca · 01/10/2006 08:55

I ended up with something called dry socket after having a tooth removed, basically it is an infection to the bone (not nice at all).

If it is still hurting tomorrow i would go back and see your dentist as you could have an infection which you will need AB's for.

HTH and hope you feel better soon there really is no worse pain than toothache

oxocube · 01/10/2006 09:00

LTH, it was a top one. I hadn't had any trouble with it at all until a few months ago, half of the tooth literally snapped off. Dentist cleaned it and put on a temporary filling but said I would have to come back so he could look at it properly (my appointment was actually for something else!). When I went back on Wednesday, he took off temp filling but when he drilled, the decay was too deep and the nerve was exposed. He pulled it there and then, it took about 5 mins as was awkward - not much tooth to get a grip on- but I have been fine. He is a really good dentist though, don't know if this makes a difference. I have had loads of stuff done by him including having a bridge replaced, crowns, root canals and have never had much pain afterwards.

It is possible you have a dry socket, definitely pop in to see your dentist to get it checked out.

vvvvvvv · 01/10/2006 11:34

TO ME IT SOUNDS LIKE A DRY SOCKET AS i used to work as a dental nurse if i was u tomorrow go bk to the dentist and they will maybe xray it for you to see whats going on,if it is a dry socket they will give you abs. dry socket is very commam after a extraction so nothing to worry about at also if it was a longer procedure sometimes it can take longer to heal up. try holding your hand over your face to get it worme that can somtimes ease the pain. let me know how u get on. good luck xx

LadyTophamHatt · 01/10/2006 17:11

Ah, yes oxocube I've had both top wisdom teeth out and they were a breeze compared to the bottom one.
I think it's the first time since I was little girl that I have cried becuase of pain. Awful awful awful, I was meant to go back 2 weeks later and have the other bottom one out....I still have it in there 9 months later!!

hairymclary · 01/10/2006 22:07

ahhh i will definitely go back tomorrow then, i didn';t think it ought to still be hurting.
It did take her quite a while to get it out as it was in a funny position and I think that hasn't helped.
thanks for the replies

hairymclary · 02/10/2006 20:43

ok well i went today and saw a different dentist (only one they could fit mer in with)
he said it was infected but antibiotics wouldn't do anything and so he just sprayed some stuff in it and then packed it.
unfortunately the stuff he packed it with has just all fallen out

OP posts:
vvvvvvv · 03/10/2006 09:29

was it brown stuff did he pack it with twezers? if so that is like a abs.how is it felling now?

CovenOVeneer · 03/10/2006 09:39

The stuff he packed in it treats the infection at it's source whih is more effective than oral antibiotics, it will fall out but as long as it is there for a while it will do the trick (sometimes you need to go back for a second application). Keep the area as clean as possible (hot salt water rinses 3-4 times a day) and for pain releif take paracetamol then 2 hours later ibuprofen then a further 2 hours later paracetmol again etc etc (this allows you to have a more continuous higher level of pain relief iyswim). Hope you are feeling better soon.

hairymclary · 03/10/2006 21:49

yes, brown hairy stuff! very weird lol
it felt better this morning but has worsened as the day has gone on.
the hole seems to be closing up though, which i am assuming is good? or maybe not if it is still infected?
the gum all around it is noticeably redder than the rest of my mouth still, and very, very tender

do you think I need to go back to have it done again? or is this normal?

OP posts:
kittywits · 03/10/2006 22:23

Oh. the brown hairy stuff saved my life. A couple of years ago I had a really , really nasty wisdom tooth extraction. I got infection, after infection post op and would go back and have the socket packed about twice a week for a good month. I had awful probs afterwards with my jaw and strange tooth pain in teeth that had already had root canals. Turned out the extraction had caused mw to have TMJ.
Sorry, ignoring the op, yes do go and see the dentist, sounds very much like a dry socket.

vvvvvvv · 03/10/2006 22:51

nothing to worry about. prob dont need more abs put in but just go along to the dentist and let him have another look. best of luckxxx

hairymclary · 03/10/2006 23:10

thanks for all the advice
I hate keep going back because I feel like i'm just wasting their time.
I'll see how it is tomorrow, my dentist only works wednesdays for her NHS patients so hopefully i'll be able to get an emergency appt with her

OP posts:
vvvvvvv · 04/10/2006 10:02

how is it felling today? has the redniss gone down? if so i would say that your prob ok and the little bit of ab that you had as cleared it up

hairymclary · 04/10/2006 21:52

less painful, but still quite sore and the gum is very red still.

another question though, the gum has really receeded on the tooth next to it since I had it done and that tooth is now very sensitive. is that normal after an extraction or is it something I should be worried about?
