getting sterlised

after much deliberation I am going to visit GP next week to ask to be referred for sterlisation. I am nearly 42, have 2 dd's. dh doesn't wnat the snip, and I don't want to pressurise him into it, and I am perfectly happy to have the op.
apparently it isn't covered on the nhs in this area so would have to go private and think it is quite expensive.
has anyone had it done, and how long for recovery afterwards, and how long before you can drive again etc...?

Do they have Essure in the UK? I haven't had it but am considering doing it at a later date.

v. interesting... not heard of it before. have you heard of it before in UK?

I'm in the US. Don't know if it's available internationally or not, but it would be worth checking into as it's so much less invasive to get done.

thanks, will ask GP

I'm going to have the procedure done next month so will let you know how it goes. The consultant I saw was very confident that it was the best form of sterilisation for me as I've had three c sections. I may not need anaesthetic and it will only take about half hour from start to finish. Like you bagpuss I got fed up with DH skirting the subject so will have no bother doing it myself.

Why not try the Mirena? Supposedly as reliable as sterilisation but not an operation under GA with all the risks that entails. Will probably see you safely through to the menopause!

expatinscotland · 30/09/2006 22:20

Warning: Mirena coil is progesten (hormone) based contraception.

If you're NOT a peron whose body agrees w/progesten, give it a miss.

One of my sister's friends just has the Essure procedure and is pretty pleased.

She just had her 3th a year ago and is 41.

multitasker - are you in UK/England... I have never heard of this before - does it come on NHS or do you have to go private and roughly how much?

I am in N Ireland and am having it done on the NHS. I suppose you could go private but I was referred to a hospital out of my locality simply because the waiting list was so much shorter, and from the time I saw the consultant to the time I will be having it done is only about two months.

I am getting sterilised as I am happy to know it will be permenant and I don't have to worry about any other forms of contraception. I think most of them just don't agree with me, really.

I am getting sterilised in a weeks time and I am now beginning to panic myself over it. I am the biggest wimp in the world!!!
