news.sky.com/story/1353727/race-to-trace-passengers-on-ebola-nurse-plane

Apparently, she flew before displaying symptoms. But, the other passengers need to be traced due to the proximity of the nurse flying (evening before) and showing symptoms (morning after).

Hopefully no symptoms, no contagion.

But fuck me America, how many chances do you want to to get it wrong?

What on earth was she thinking?

meditrina · 15/10/2014 19:48

"What on earth was she thinking?"

Presumably she was thinking that she was fine at that point, was not running a temperature or displaying any other symptoms (and so would nit be infectious at that point) and had it been out in quarantine or had any restrictions put on her movements.

If health officials now think that any HCP involved in an ebola case must themselves go into isolation for 21 days, then they need to say so clearly.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2014 19:58

Apparently she was running a low grade fever.

However. Sawyers didn't transmit it on his flights and he was really symptomatic in the airport and Duncan doesn't so far appear to have given it to his family, so it still seems to hold true that you have to be really very ill before it is readily transmissible. So I don't think there is much risk if any to the other passengers. Was still not very wise though.

meditrina · 15/10/2014 20:10

Oh, that's not good. I thought she had flown on Monday and became symptomatic on Tuesday.

Anyone who has even icw cases and who start a fever should quarantine (at home or any other form of temporary isolation) and seek specialist advice. And they should all know what they need to do.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2014 20:14

news report on nurse.

Hopefully it's got its facts wrong. It did seem awfully lucky to have come down with symptoms the morning after an evening flight.

roundandround51 · 15/10/2014 20:19

Its very doubtful that anyone was infected but it shows how poor US protocals are

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2014 20:52

A new edict has been issued about not travelling while under surveillance.

I can imagine the CDC nailing each new rule to their front door (ala Filch when professor Umbridge takes over Hogwarts)

Stratter5 · 15/10/2014 21:00

Apparently, a Dr working with the NBC, making a documentary in Sierra Leone went out to a restaurant, whilst under 21 quarantine, whilst she was supposed to have isolated herself at home. The entire NBC team is now under enforced quarantine.

So arrogant.

Molotov · 15/10/2014 21:05

Yes, Stratter, I'd read that too.

I actually thought I had misread it ... it just sounded so stupid and unreal.

FFS. Carers not being given correct PPE, protocols not being followed, movement restrictions ignored - what else will come out? People need to wise up.

meditrina · 15/10/2014 21:27

If you're put under house isolation, then you need to stay home.

As things like supermarket shopping can be delivered and left on your doorstep, there's surely no reason to go out. Being quarantined must be very stressful, but if an HCP didn't follow the rules, what hope is there that the general population will?

Oh, ffs ...

The latest update is that she had symptoms from Friday. So she took 2 flights and visited relatives in Cleveland and went shopping for her wedding dress, all while potentially contagious.

They didn't say what symptoms she had but the airline are replacing the seat covers in the plane. I think that points towards her having vomiting or diarrhea while on the plane. Not in her seat obviously but they might be worried about particle contamination. The crew that were on her flight have been placed on paid leave for 21 days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2014 07:45

It's probably not helpful to speculate whether she was vomiting or not - the airline replacing seat covers is not an indicator of anything other than they want to allay people's fears. It seems that the reaction to these cases by various bodies and companies swings sharply from complacent and careless to over-reacting and ridiculous without any measured reaction in between.

At some point clear and reasonable guidelines will need to be issued and enforced because even if we just get the expected handful of cases it's going to be enough to seriously damage economies and create panic in the public - with unpredictable consequences.

TheLovelyBoots · 17/10/2014 08:34

She had muscle aches and fatigue over the weekend. No vomiting/diarrhea. We don't really know enough about Ebola to comfortably say that she couldn't have been contagious at this point.
