pointydog · 29/09/2006 21:52

How long does she take the tablets for?

Katymac · 29/09/2006 21:53

indefinatley

DH went on it about 9m ago and still has it now

I don't like this

OP posts:
pointydog · 29/09/2006 21:55

I've never heard of that. Does brown and blue inhalers not work for her then?

Katymac · 29/09/2006 22:00

We have been off the brown for ages

We do green now & purple then when she is bad

OP posts:
pointydog · 29/09/2006 22:13

Oh, I've never heard of green and purple. So are the tablets meant to be better than brown inhaler? And couldn't she come off tablets when peak flow is back up?

Katymac · 29/09/2006 22:16

Well the nurse didn't say that - mind you dh's peak flow has got higher

I just feel down about it

OP posts:
jennster · 29/09/2006 22:30

Purple (like brown or orange) needs to be taken all the time. Green should not be taken with purple though! Better to take inhalers than tablets.

Katymac · 29/09/2006 22:52

Green is all the time swop to purple when bad

I don't like tablets

OP posts:
jennster · 29/09/2006 23:51

Completely wrong. The purple has a steroid in and so only works when taken for about weeks solid. The purple also has the green in anyway, so you would be doubling up. Either your Asthma nurse is a bit bonkers or you haven't been explained properly how to use them. Go to your pharmacy and they SHOULD explain what I have said. PLEASE go back and double check. Ask for an MUR (medication use review) at your usual/a pharmacy and get this sorted out.

Katymac · 29/09/2006 23:57

Maybe I am getting confused - when her peak flow is high she uses the green, when it drops she has to use the purple

She has been using the purple for about 6 weeks atm

Her peak flow is between 90 & 180 over the last 4 days and between 90 & 150 for about 6 weeks before that

She is normally between 250 and 350 (but only gradually changing from day to day - no big ups & downs like atm)

That might be a better explaination

OP posts:
Katymac · 29/09/2006 23:59

She is also having her blue 2 puffs three times a day

foxinsocks · 30/09/2006 08:45

katy, I was under the impression that because the purple is the steroid one (including the stuff that's in the green) that you were meant to take it like the old brown one - i.e. you take it all the time (because it's a preventor). I thought the green was like the blue but had a longer lasting effect so by taking the green, you're not doing any preventing, you're just treating the symptoms.

I may be completely wrong but I would DEFINITELY ask for a medication review. It sounds like she needs to be taking the preventor all the time rather than when she needs it as this sounds like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted.

We recently had a medication review for dd and now she's managing just on the brown one and we only need the blue if she gets a cold/hayfever on top iyswim.

call asthma uk helpline and speak to a professional nurse about this

they are extremely helpful and can clear up any doubt

and they're lovely and experienced too

Twiglett · 30/09/2006 08:49

asthma uk .. you can also email them

Katymac · 30/09/2006 08:59

Thanks - will ring them up

Just checking the labels the Green is Serevent and the purple is Seretide

So I am guessing they are a similar medication

However I will ring on Monday

Yes the names of inhalers are right and foxinsocks you're right about the use of the inhalers.

OK dim mummy alert

So grenn = blue = releiver

Not green = brown (now purple) = preventer???

At last I understand (slow I know)

So the purple is a replacement for the green

The tablet is Singulair (montelukast)

So she is unlikely to go back on the green (DH who attended the Asthma nurse confirmed this...bu&&er it's the first time he mentioned that)

She hasn't had brown for ages.....Oh Hell I should just leave this for DH after all he has asthma too

She was on brown until quite recently - he tells me

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 01/10/2006 19:21

Purple isn't necessarily a replacement for green - it is exactly like the green (reliever) but with an added steroid (preventor) so that you take it every day to get its benefits.

I'm amazed she was only ever on the green on its own in the first place tbh. Green is like the blue one but just lasts longer from what I understand.

I would really go and see the GP this time. It really sounds like she needs her medication properly sorted out so that her asthma doesn't deteriorate like it did this time.

Katymac · 01/10/2006 19:29

I am going to have to go aren't I

It's just so difficult the surgery arranges the appt after school & DH & she have a joint appt

So I need to stay at home (cos one or other of us needs to be on duty)

So I need to get a separate appt for her & go on a different day
