Flu Jabs - yes or no?

Will you be getting a flu jab this year? What about your children?

DD and I both got one last year, and had a much healthier winter - but not sure if the jab be credited, or if our tolerance was up after being sick so much the previous year.

dd1 has been offered it, as has dh. they will be getting it.

jabberwocky · 30/09/2006 17:05

Nope, I never get one, neither does ds. Dh and I seriously considered getting one last year, but in the end decided against it.

MP, I think they are generous in some areas and not in others. Dd has asthma (which can be quite bad) and we have never been offered one. Last year, they were vaccinating only those in their 'highest risk' categories (but I think this may have been because of the limited supplies).

jabberwocky - can I ask why you decided against it?

I've had the flu jab for the last 3 or 4 years. Am very mildly asthmatic but had a major chest infection adn asthma attack when I was expecting dd.

Poppies, I haven't noticed that it reduces the number of colds I get tbh. The reason why it should be done every year if you fall into one of at risk categories is because the flu virus mutates and could be a different strain each year. Neither does it actually prevent someone catching flu', it just means you are not as ill as someone who hasn't had the jab - and you are ill for a shorter time (ie, less likely to end up at your GP/hospital with complications. At least that's how I understand it!

Well, it's really a crapshoot as to whether they have correctly guessed which flu strain will be the one that year. Also, it still has thimerosol as a preservative which is a bit worrying to me.

Am wondering whether to or not, as dd2 due early December, feels like a lot to deal with flu on top of new baby plus pre-schooler plus no help in January. On the other hand, GP says best to have the flu occasoinally and up immunity - which sounds convincing.

I used to get it regularly as had chronic hepatitis (no longer), and I did catch it off DH one year anyway - just had it much more mildly than he did, lower temps, not nearly as ill.

expatinscotland · 30/09/2006 18:46

I usually get it b/c I work w/students.

Plus, the last time I had flu, I got pneumonia and wound up in hospital for Xmas.

That sucked.

fullmoonfiend · 30/09/2006 18:57

Boots are doing flu jabs this year, but you have to book. I'm considering it because I get a nasty bout every year - usually at xmas

mummydear · 01/10/2006 07:28

I looked on Boots web site and couldn't see any info about flu jabs, anybody got any links ?
