runny poo in toddler

DD's 18 months and for about the last month or so she hasn't passed a single 'solid' poo. Some of them are extremely watery but all are more or less runny. She's always had this when she's been teething which she was when it started and they had that tooth poo smell if you know what I mean. But the molars are all through now. She's not ill or off her food in particular and her bottom's not sore. Should I be worried? Nothing's changed in her diet or daily routine.

It may be worth seeing the GP and sending off a stool sample. It could be a harmless bug that present or it could be something else. I'd seek advise because she may become dehydrated. Also you may find that if it continues for a long period of time you'll have trouble toilet training. My ds1 still doesn't have much control over his bowls after eating fruit with skins (apples, pears). He's five.

Thanks flip. I just posted on your thread by the way. I guess I should see the GP but she doesn't seem ill and unlike your poor ds doesn't have a sore bottom with it. I don't think she's dehydrated but come to think of it her nappies have been a bit lighter. Ok, GP.

Evita, my ds has something a bit like this. I think it's caled 'toddler diarrhoea'. His poos are always very squidgy, and vary from moderately well formed to exploding out of the nappy. He is very well in himself, and it is not like diarrhoea, as it is not leaking out all the time like diarrhoea - he will 'do a poo' and it is just the formation that is the issue.

You can try cutting out juice, particularly apple juice, but if you're worried then see the GP.

Hi Evita, DDd1 had this from around 10 months until she was two and a bit. It used to drive us mad as she would poo up to 8 times a day and it was regularly very explosive, necessitating a change of clothes and a bath. We did worry a bit but it never seemed to cause her any distress or ill effects and in the end it just stopped - pretty much overnight, exactly as various docs had said would. Seems like she had a classic case of toddler diarrhoea, whatever that is.

I think if she seems fine, she is fine.

Thanks everyone.

musica, you may be right about the juice, she's been drinking more of it lately, I'll cut that out for a few days and see what happens.

I've never heard of toddler diarrhea, I'll look into that, that sounds like what it is.
