So I'm treating it with Vaseline. But how can I stop it? It's only one eye.

I get Old Lady Watery Eye in the winter, hugely annoying but this stuff makes it a tiny bit better.

Apparently 'dry eye' causes watery eyes. It makes no sense to me either but I mentioned my constantly watery left eye to my GP & he told me to try these drops. They do help a bit.
i suppose you could try any eye drops for dry / irritated eyes.

I generally look a tit and wear sunglasses when I walk the dog, if I don't tears would be dripping down my face. I bought a pair of cycling ones from lidl with changeable light and dark lenses so I don't walk into trees on dull days.

It's the change in weather, I get dry skin and often runny eyes every year when I start putting the central heating on. Put a large bowl of water in the room you are most in and apply plenty of good cream after shower/bath. Put a used chamomile tea bag on your eye lid for 10 min at night before bed.

Pop into your local opticians. My mum suffers from this and often has to wear her sun glasses. It was something that was easily corrected with some eye drops. Will try and find the name of them later.

BettyMoody · 13/10/2014 13:56

this IS interesting. WAH that it happens to everyone's mum!

Hi Betty. This watery eyes thing has hit me too. Not all of the time, but some of the time, and it was explained to me as a mostly post menopausal thing -basically, becoming desiccated (nice) and the wateriness is a response to the irritation of the eye surface being a bit dry - it's a reaction to protect the eye surface.

I thought I might have blocked tear ducts, as I'd had a diabolical cold a few years before, the worst I'd ever had, and I thought maybe the tear ducts had got partially blocked.

I had them probed at the hospital - I was scared, but it was surprisingly OK. That might have made a little bit of difference - I couldn't swear to it - but, all the same, I do sometimes need to use drops now, if my eyeballs are feeling a bit hot and gritty.

Apparently, this is quite common. Funny, isn't it, how you never hear of these things, and then when they happen to YOU, you find that they're 'quite common'?!

beccajoh · 16/10/2014 13:19

I get this but never realised it's an actual thing. Just assumed I was a bit weird. Will see if I can get some of those drops.

It was the optician at specsavers who said she thought I had dry eyes when I told her about similar symptoms. Like you I thought how can they be dry when they are streaming. But apparently that is what dry eye can do. GP prescribed Gel Tears and it has definitely stopped the worst of the leakage, though sometimes they are still runny in the wind and/or cold.

In my case it seems to have got worse alongside other peri-menopausal symptoms My eyes feel prickly and gritty when I wake up and the gel tears makes them feel better then.
