Just did the colour prediction link and worked fine for my kids but am now puzzled about certain member of my family!!!
My partner is half asian half irish and has black hair light brown skin and v.green eyes.me white with blue eyes. Our kids dd1 olive skin, chestnut hair and denim blue eyes (what i call half cast blue as you only seem to see it when theres a mix of race).dd2 pale skin blonde hair and same eyes as the other one,but with a yellowish ring in the middle.People always comment on dd1s eyes as they seem at odds with her colouring.Funny thing how colurings mix!

squatchette · 30/09/2006 09:03

My DH has brown - hazel eyes, I have green, DD has stunning blue eyes & we've just had a DS who, although too early to tell looks as though they may be brown..

chocolateshoes · 30/09/2006 19:39

I have brown, DP has green & DS has very blue eyes. He's 15mths now & they're still there. I hope they stay blue...anyone know what the latest is they could change?

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 30/09/2006 19:47

I have Hazel eyes. H has blue eyes

DS1 dark brown (gorgeous!) eyes
DS2 blue eyes

katyt1 · 30/09/2006 19:59

me - blue
dh - brownish, not a clear colour
ds (4 months) - sort of grey/brown mix so far...

becky, grrr about your mil, good on you ignoring it! but i wanted ds to stay blue and kind of think it's a shame they haven't, irrational i know but all my family are blue-eyed.

i wanted to follow up the other question of timings, when shd a babies eyes settle to one colour?
kt

crazydazy · 30/09/2006 20:14

I'm the same as you Eulalia!!! I am blue eyed and DP brown and both our kids are brown eyed. My parents are both blue eyed. His are mum brown and dad blue. Brown must be a strong gene.

expatinscotland · 30/09/2006 20:15

I have VERY dark brown eyes.

DH has blue ones.

DD1 - pea green eyes.

DD2 - she's only 9 months, but they're going hazel.

Both girls have very light brown hair w/goldish streaks in it.

bottomburp · 30/09/2006 22:49

from what i understand it is important what grandparents are as well. from gcse genetics a LONG time ago so presumably simplified:blue eyes are produced by bb genes (one from each parent) and brown eyes are a result of BB, Bb or bB.B is the dominant gene so overrules b. so if you are brown eyed BB and partner blue eyed bb then all children will be Bb so have brown eyes. but if you are a brown eyed Bb and partner bb then you have a one in four chance of having a bb blue eyed baby.to be a brown eyed Bb one of your parents must carry the little b gene.
my husband and i are both dark brown eyed. my husband has a blue eyed parent and i have a green eyed parent and our DD at 6mths still has blue eyes.this is prob an oversimplified view but hope it helps?

just to add my bit...

me - dark brown
dh - blue
lo - very blue

sis - brown
her dh - black/brown
their children - brightest blue!!

nell12 · 01/10/2006 15:47

Everyone has 2 colour genes for eyes, one from each parent.

You need to have "2 blues" to have blue eyes

Any other combination will result in the more dominant colour winning
eg blue and green = green
green and brown = hazel or brown
etc etc
Therefore you could have a blue eyed father (blue and blue) and a brown eyed mother (green and brown, for example) and end up with green-eyed kids IF the green gene is passed on and brown eyed kids IF the brown gene is passed on from the mum.

Xena · 01/10/2006 16:02

I think the only thing you can say is that 2 blue eyed parents can't have a brown eyed child, because of the way things are inherited, but I think that brown eyed parents could theoretically have almost any colour children.

It is supposed to be the case but DH and I have blue eyes and DS1 has blue DD1 green DD2 BROWN!! and DS2 blue
The reason blue eyed parents shouldn't have brown eyed children is that if they have the brown gene then they should have brown eyes as the brown gene is more dominant. I would be prepared to take a DNA test to show DD2 is DH's (although its no one would even suggest she isn't his as she is a replica. she thinks that the pic we have on the wall of DH and his twin at 2 is her!)

This is a good website to read re eye colour.

tamum · 01/10/2006 17:40

You can't say it's simple, there aren't only two genes. I don't know how I can say it any more strongly but believe me I know what I'm talking about. You can not say that two blue eyed parents can't have a brown eyed child because they can, because it's a polygenic trait. Just because something mostly happens doesn't mean that it always has to.

iota · 01/10/2006 17:47

Tamum, I'm thinking of posting your explanation for the 3rd time on this thread

tamum · 01/10/2006 17:51

Iota (not sounding testy, was I )

Actually Attila's link is excellent, says it all much better than I did.

CarolinaMoon · 01/10/2006 18:11

I should know because I've done it often enough myself , but what is the point of posting 'the answer' on a thread like this without actually bothering to read the effing thread first.

Have we got to 98 posts without anyone posting what they learnt in GCSE biology? Of course not, we've been there several times and thankfully be roundly corrected .

I agree with Floating though - it we be nice if what we learnt at school could be relied on as fact .

CarolinaMoon · 01/10/2006 18:12
