HI!

My DD is 4.5 months old and has eczema on her face. Sometimes it gets really bad. She itches it all the time sometimes until it starts bleeding. We tried using Sudocrem & Infaderm, have room temperature on the lowest and she wears only cotton. Our Health Visitor said to use Sudocrem and wash the face regularly, but it does not do anything (apart from relieves itching a little bit). Have you got any tips on how to make it better and what else we shoud try.

Thank you very much

Tillysmummy how old is your dd? If taking her off the milk helped so drastically I would definitely take if off her cereal too at least for now. You could try reintroducing it as yoghurt, the one with the live cultures in it, as it is more easily digested, perhaps when she is about 3. We did this with dd on specialist's advice and after having soy milk until age 3 1/2 and gradually reintroducing cows milk, she is now fine with dairy (she is now almost 6). HTH!

Hi Mollipops, thanks for the advice, that's what I'll do. It does seem silly giving her milk when her eczema is so much better without it. Did you give DD Weysoy?

Thewiseone · 06/08/2002 14:46

Why don't you just use fresh goat milk - easily found in supermarket - for her cereals ?
I would NOT presume that Weysoy SMA is GM free.. I am sure they'd say if it was !
It is very difficlut to find GM free soya in general.

Tillysmummy · 06/08/2002 14:54

That's true. Maybe I should ask them. I guess I could use Goat's milk. I know it's terribly prejudiced but I hate goats cheese so can't bear the thought of giving her goats milk which is madness I know.

Thewiseone · 06/08/2002 14:56

It is

GillW · 06/08/2002 15:00

My DS actually likes the goats milk more than he did formula/cows milk/soya - so you never know until you try it.

Tillysmummy · 06/08/2002 15:06

I'll try it. BTW I checked on the web to see what SMA include and I can't find their website !! Any clues anybody?

Thewiseone · 06/08/2002 15:14

It's here

Thewiseone you're a star !

I've just looked on the Wysoy tin, it doesn't say whether it is GM free or not, so I would assume not. They do have a care line - 0345 762900 (UK). One of the other formula makers does Infasoy, I don't know if that is any better but I get Wysoy on prescription for DD (until she is 5) and this seems to be the preferred brand at my Health Centre. There's also one called Nutramigen for really sensitive people but I don't know much about this one.

Tillysmummy · 06/08/2002 16:04

Thanks for that PamT, I am veering towards being a little unprejudiced and putting her on fresh goats milk full stop. But I will get more info. Thanks for the advice.

Tillysmummy, I actually bf dd until she was about 14 months so luckily didn't have to worry about formula (I am assuming that is what Weysoy is, forgive my aussie ignorance here if I'm wrong!) but she had So Good which is calcium enriched soy milk on her cereal and in smoothies etc after that. Mostly she preferred water (and still does). I actually read an interesting brochure today about lactose intolerance when I took ds to the clinic, and it said that cheese doesn't contain lactose (eg edam, swiss, cheddar) and butter, cream and processed cheese contain very little. Not sure if lactose is the link in aggravating eczema or if it usually just a gut reaction but maybe these things are worth a try as alternative sources of calcium. Anyone know more about if lactose is the problem?

mollipops · 07/08/2002 09:51

PS Know how you feel re the goats milk thing as I bought soy cheese once to try giving dd, and tried it myself after she refused it - it was disgusting! But you don't know til you try do you...or til dd tries that is!

Tillysmummy · 07/08/2002 10:35

That's true Mollipops and im going to go to the supermarket tomorrow and buy some goats milk for her cereal. I still don't know what to give her for her two bottles though, I wanted to stick to some kind of formula whether Soya or other non dairy alternative for all the added vitamins but maybe i'd be better just sticking with goats milk for all her milk ? She is nearly a year and has a varied diet and I think that the reason they say formula rather than cows milk till a year is because of all the added vitamins in formula.

Any other advice anyone ?

GillW · 07/08/2002 11:01

If you're worried about losing out on the vitamins etc in formula, you could always give goats milk plus a vitamin supplement. At "nearly a year" I don't think it would hurt to switch now, as long as the rest of her diet's fairly well balanced.

allatsea · 08/08/2002 10:20

I know that this is a bit off track, but what is baby eczema? The HV said my dd (6 months) has had it for about 6 weeks. HV said to smother it in vaseline so it doesn't turn into 'real' ezcema. Any suggestions?

trudles · 08/08/2002 11:38

dd has been going through a bad spell with eczema just lately she's been covered in red itchy patches despite using steroids and various moisturisers. So bought some e45 junior moisturising mousse on monday and I seem to be getting good results the rash has disapeered from almost everywhere apart from small patches on her wrists so fingers crossed I think I might have cracked it for now.
