Wow Anniebear, what a story....

I am so glad Ellie has made what seems such a good recovery...
She is truly beautiful - I love the bad hair day picture...

Grace is stunning too, and from some of your posts I understand she is a very thoughtful and loving girl..

You must be very proud of both your lovely girls...

maycontainstress · 29/09/2006 16:23

I am so pleased that Ellie has made such an amazing recovery, she really is a very special girl.

That 'bad hair day' photo is absolutely GORGEOUS!

I contracted Meningecochal Meningitis at the age of 22 and nearly lost my life.

I am very much in favour of the vaccinations.

NotSoUselessMum · 29/09/2006 16:27

anniebar, your little girls is so pretty and she's definitely got a cheeky smile!

I've read many threads about it and I am still confused...could I ask you a question? How does it work with the new vaccine? My DD is 14m. would she have it done by the NHS before she turns too or should I go and have it done privately?

Twiglett · 29/09/2006 16:42

Ellie our Special Girl

Meningitis Trust

(I just made your links work annie)

amyjade · 29/09/2006 19:01

anniebear your daughter is beautiful!
I'm so glad she is recovering well. Ellie is a very lucky little girl.xxx

Is it possible someone could put a link to Freya's story the website is www.meningitis.org and her story is under Case studies.
Freya sadly wasn't one of the lucky ones i only wish the vaccine had been brought in sooner then she would still be here now.

I think Ellie and Freya's story is more than enough to show the absolute importance of this new vaccine.

jetgirl · 29/09/2006 22:49

notsouseless,
my d is 13 months and had vaccination on weds, NHS contacted us. I suppose it varies between health authorities. Why not check with your hv?

NotSoUselessMum · 30/09/2006 08:33

thank you jetgirl, I will. they haven't even contacted us for the MMR either yet. and she's 14m thinking about it.

will defo demand info on monday!!

BarefootJasnem · 30/09/2006 08:44

Freya

I can't link to the right page. Click on Media, then case studies, and it will come up.

izzybiz · 30/09/2006 10:31

Thankyou for the links, Im Freyas Aunty, and i am bumping this thread, we need as many people as possible to read these stories.

sandcastles · 30/09/2006 14:26

anniebear, thank you for sharing your story, I had my dd vaccinated recently in Oz. We have just emigrated here & I wanted her to have whatever she needed to keep her as protected as possible. I was evev more convinced to do it once I had read about Freya.

Your little girls are adorable. It's good to hear that Ellie is recovering, I guess her will be a long road. Grace is going to be very protective of he sister. Good Luck to you all.

SoupDragon · 30/09/2006 14:30

My friend's DD contracted this just before she turned 2. "luckily" she was "only" left profoundly deaf. With a cochlear implant she's living a normal life 5.5 years on.

BabyDragon has her vaccination on Monday.

Olihan · 30/09/2006 14:36

Notsouseless, my dd had her MMR on Tues and was given the pnemoccocal at the same time. The nurse told me that they weren't sending separate appointments for each, if the MMR was due then they were doing both in one go. It might be worth ringing your surgery and asking when she's due her MMR, it must be imminent if she's 14 months, and checking.

On a bit of a tangent, does anyone know how you go about finding somewhere that does jabs privately? Ds won't get it and I hate the idea of dd and dc3 being immunised and not him. Also, how much it costs? (Not that that'll make a difference but I'd like to have an idea)

Olihan · 30/09/2006 14:38

Sorry, anniebear and amyjade, forgot to say thank you for posting your stories and for fighting to get this vaccine introduced so other people may not have to go through what you both went through.

izzybiz · 30/09/2006 18:17

My Dd had her pneumo jab privately, i asked my Gp and she ordered it for her. She neede 2 jabs and they were £55 each.

NotSoUselessMum · 30/09/2006 18:31

Olihan, thanks so much! I'll ask the GP on monday about it.

dh says yuou should ask your GP about where to get the jabs privately. That's what he did for something else.

nulnulcat · 30/09/2006 18:50

my dd has recently had meningitus and is now recovering at home, would say to every parent out there to get the vaccine i would not wish those days of hell and feeling helpless on anyone

Highlander · 30/09/2006 20:50

our HV told me that there wasn't enough vaccine in our region and parents were actually demanding it - bit of a turn up for the books. I casually mentioned that DS had a shot as baby in Canada and, bless her, she wrote me a letter saying they had some in and DS was a priority toddler alongside the babies

anniebear · 01/10/2006 18:25

Thanks for reading and thanks for doing the link

Hope it encourages you all to have the vaccine done

Yes, we are fortunate Ellie survived, but she survived with a lot of problems and will always be miles behind her twin sister and won't ever catch up

I suppose the thing I could tell you that will have you all running for the vaccine is that she hasn't slept propery since she was ill, infact, she has never slept through !!!!!

mummy2jake · 01/10/2006 19:08

hi i was told my little boy who has just turned 2 on friday my get the vaccine if he hasn`t had a card through the post by oct 3rd then he has missed out does anyone know if that means he misses out altogther or he wil get it later or who i contact to find out.

NotSoUselessMum · 02/10/2006 12:43

I've called the surgery and they've booked an apt for the MMR and Pneumoccoccal for this friday.

i was waiting for them to contact me but I would have waited for ever. correct me if I am worng but I was under the impression that they'd send me an apt but apparently they don't. I should have called when she was 13m to book it in. maybe is a london thing or my sh**ty area...

anyway it's done now so thanks all of you!!

jetgirl · 02/10/2006 20:14

Glad you were able to get an appt sorted so easily. I was also under the impression that parents were contacted automatically, perhaps it depends on your health authority. Hope it goes ok on Friday!

QuiQuoQua · 02/10/2006 20:36

oh I hope so too JG, I am a bit worried now...

have you done yours or is it this wedn coming?

(it's Notsouseless.... I've changed it as it was not me anymore.)

jetgirl · 05/10/2006 11:59

It was last Weds and went fine. DD was asleep when we got there, but woke up very quickly when the nurse gave her the first jab! She recovered enough to be able to wave goodbye when we we left, so I figured she wasn't that fussed by it. She was a bit grumpy at the weekend - a side-effect of the MMR, but wasn't fussed by the meningitis jab; a little rash, but we expected that as she has had Erythema before. Thinking of you tmw, QQQ
