Whats the normal age for baby teeth to fall out

Today, my daughters bottom baby tooth came out, she didn't even know, she came in and said her tooth hurt and when i looked it had come out. I found it on the living room floor. Shes 5 1/2, is that normal? It wasn't rotton or bad, she said it had been wobbling. I just wondered if that was normal, and how old was other peoples kids when their teeth started falling out.

Very normal- you'll find that the children in herclass will all start getting gaps now. In sec school i've had a few kids loose teeth in my lessons even - lots of blood too. (because of the teeth)

My dd is 6 and hasn't lost any teeth yet, but alot of her friends started losing them at about 5, so I wouldn't worry. My dd is most annoyed that hers are all intact

Soulfly · 10/04/2004 20:19

Thats good then , i thought perhaps all her teeth would fall out for something,!! Phew,

Thank you.

Imo there is nothing more gross than watching ds quite happily pull a loose tooth out!

lol. the funny thing was she didn't even realise, lol. Shes excited because the tooth fairy is coming to pay her a visit tonight.

4 plus 2 months. Was v. worried but now some in her class have lost the top two. At the time thought she might reach puberty at 10, but now the more rational me sees there's no correlation! Thank goodness!

roisin · 10/04/2004 21:36

Varies a lot. Ds1 didn't lose his first til he was nearly 6.5 ... he was a bit cross too Nutty!

Do all 20 baby teeth fall out and get replaced by adult ones?

Just noticed yesterday that he had some new(ish) back ones behind his baby teeth iyswim.

Soulfly · 10/04/2004 22:46

I don't know, they must loose them all surely?

my first tooth came out on new years eve! i was 4 years and 7 months....
is that dreadful!?

HiddenSpirit · 11/04/2004 00:35

My son is 5.5 and has lost 7 of his baby teeth!!! Not rotten or anything, but they did seem to come out rather easily (i.e. he fell at nursery, that knocked 2 teeth loose, Daddy opened a door, not realising DS1 had run up and door hit him, that knocked another 2 loose)

roisin, the "6-yr-old molars" are the first adult teeth and do come through while all the baby teeth are still there. Baby teeth only include 1 premolar and 1 molar - adult teeth have 2 premolars and 2 molars (or 3 if the wisdom teeth arrive).
Oh - I just did a google and apparently the baby teeth have 2 molars and no premolars. Useful site .

ds is seven in June and has only lost 2 bottom teeth (in December) - the 2nd teeth were lined up behind them ! No sign of losing anymore yet, though some of his classmates have loads of 2nd teeth !

Linnet · 11/04/2004 23:30

My dd lost her first tooth just after she'd turned 5. Since then she has lost another 2 from the bottom ones and one of the middle ones from the top, sorry don't know the proper name for them. Dd's friend at school didn't lose her first tooth until she was past her 6th birthday.

I once read somewhere that the earlier their baby teeth come through the earlier they start to fall out but I don't know how much truth there is to that.

Sorry Soulfly I don't mean to hijack your thread but while I'm here could I just ask if anyone else has found that this has happened to their child... My dd has a wiggly tooth down the bottom with the big tooth growing in behind it but the baby tooth shows no sign of shifting. Although it is wiggly she won't wiggle it about to make it looser, not sure if you are meant to do this but I remember doing that as a child, I feel that if it had a little encouragement it would come out.
She also has big tooth coming in up the top and the baby tooth has been pushed down so that it is hanging below the big tooth. It looks terrible as she won't brush either of the baby teeth because it hurts to brush them so they look as if they've never ever been brushed.

I've mentioned them to the dentist and he said oh, they'll be out in a few weeks maybe 2 months at most, this was back in January and they are still there. Anyone else had this sort of problem with their kids teeth.

Janh - thanks, that's just what I wanted to know. (How come you ... and my dh ... are super-googlers? I'm hopeless, I always end up with pages and pages of useless sites, and can never find what I need to know.)

HiddenSpirit · 12/04/2004 12:10

Linnet, DS1 did get his baby teeth through pretty early, so it could explain why he's lost so many already!

As for your dd, my nephew had the same and for quite a while had one tooth infront of the other. I think it did fall out itself in the end, but I know my sister was concerened (like you) at the time. No advice, sorry, just to let you know it's not uncommon

My dd, at 7 years 3 months has lost 4 teeth, three in the lower jaw (at the front) and one of the middle top. this is over a period of more than a year. 2 others are wobbly. My dentist said the average age to start losing the baby teeth is 6 years.

Demented · 12/04/2004 19:59

What an appropriate thread. I have just put my DS1 (aged 5 years 3 months) to bed and noticed that one of his bottom teeth was hanging forward slightly. Couldn't resist putting my finger on it and giving it a wiggle back and forward (I loved losing my baby teeth, great fun!). DS1 kept saying "Mummy, that's scary!".

Soulfly · 12/04/2004 20:10

I am glad that they all seem to variary in ages. I was just shocked that she is still so young, i thought i was alot older when my baby teeth started to fall out. My mum said that kids are growing up alot faster these days, but after reading this thread, it just depends on the child. But i can't stop myself from looking at her missing tooth, she keeps grinning at me, it does look abit strange. But i am sure i will get used to it.

My ds knocked his front tooth out at the top when he was one, so I am quite used to it now, hes four. I am thinking he'll look strange when his big tooth comes through!lol
