Some UK airports screening for Ebola

What a turnaround. Apparently, it's more for political reasons so that we will at least feel that something is being done.

I'll post the BBC in a sec ...

It seems to be saying a Briton might have died of Ebola in Macedonia but that he hasn't been,or his friends are claiming that hasn't been to any of the affected countries. If that's true, then it's probably not Ebola, just a rather strange case of Ebola hysteria.

This is from the BBC News website...

"Whitehall sources say it is "very unlikely" a British man who died in Macedonia on Thursday could have contracted the disease.

The UK Foreign Office had said it was urgently investigating the reports.

The unnamed man was admitted to hospital at 15:00 local time (14:00 BST) and died two hours later, Macedonia's Health Ministry said.

He had been vomiting, had a fever and was bleeding internally.

There were "high chances" it was not an Ebola case, the the ministry added.

But in a statement it said officials had followed World Health Organization procedure in closing the hotel where the man was staying and placing the residents in quarantine."

I wonder how long it'll take to confirm either way?

I heard this morning that there was to be a further announcement today on how this would actually work in practice, and there doesn't not seem to have been one.

Indeed at least one minister stopped answering questions when asked how, given the need to transit a third country, they would identify which passengers to screen. It's looking like an increasingly ropey policy - driven by politics not sound health reasons. Because the best that HCPs seem to be able to say for it is that 'it'll make us safer' (duh, yes, it can't make it worse) but don't attempt to say how much safer, and what the cost (including opportunity cost) of running this will be.

From this BBC article.

'Gatwick said on Friday morning it knew nothing about the new measures' and 'Eurostar said it was liaising with relevant authorities to work out how it will be implemented.'

It's sounding well planned and well thought through so far, then. I'd guess the cost of running this could be better spent elsewhere in fighting Ebola.

I think they chose to do it because the US chose to do it in five airports (which ironically dont include the airport that Duncan flew into)

GlacindaTheTroll · 11/10/2014 18:57

Have there been any announcements on how this screeni will actuall work in practice?

Because it's sounding to me less and less like screening, and more an opportunity to hand out leaflets telling people what to do if they run a temperature within 3 weeks of return from affected areas.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/10/2014 19:18

I've not seen any glacinda.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/10/2014 19:51

I think they're just hoping everyone else is just going to forget they ever said it.
