Um, I was once a bit like your dd - I 'borrowed' an old pair of my mother's glasses and actually wore them to school! I so wanted to be like my mummy and wear glasses. They were so strong I can remember them making the floor look all bendy. Can't remember how my mum resolved it, tbh, maybe the teachers had a word. Hope it goes well on Saturday, think you are right that being tired after school doesn't help in getting them to co-operate.

If she won't co-operate on a reading test they should be able to check her eyesight by putting drops in and looking through an ophthalmoscope or whatever they call it.

Oblomov · 28/09/2006 21:50

Totally understand.
Ds 2.8 cross eyed..
Took time off work to take him to hospital to see "eye doctor".
He refused to do any of her tests.
Was LIVID.
Total waste of time.
But remained calm, so that did not create atmosphere / fear for future visits.

Children will never do it, when you want them to, will they ?
I think opticians etc, know this.
Do not worry.
Don't do anything or say anything .
Just take her on sat, and see how she goes.

lovingbarney · 28/09/2006 21:52

neither of us wear glasses i think she is testing the boundaries of if i don't cooperate what will happen she is very good normally. I know it is not but is it sort of clever in a way to get her own way. None of her friends wear glasses it is weird.

lovingbarney, I'm an optometrist and we get this all the time! The frames are just too trendy! Your optometrist will have seen it all before. If they don't co-operate there are "tricks" we can use to figure out whether specs are needed ( although it sounds like your dd is probably fine!) and whether they are acting up. For example I have a lens with no power at all in it and most children who have a problems will say that it makes no difference to their vision whereas a child who is pretending to need specs will say that it improves their vision. You have to be sneaky in this job sometimes!

I know when I got glasses I was keen on having them because I could not see, mum mistook this for just wanting glasses, tried to persuade the optician that I was making it up. They said they can tell even if you fib and pretend not to see letters. Mum was in denial about my obvious need for my glasses until i was 16 and the optician had to take her to one side and explain!

Smurfgirl · 28/09/2006 23:04

Ack sorry lovingbarney was just telling a story, not implying you don't believe your dd x

lovingbarney · 29/09/2006 12:07

no worries smurfgirl get your point. chipmonkey reassuring to know you have seen it all before.

have decided to leave next appt for 2 weeks and practise going for eye test at home letters and numbers on wall. etc..... make a game of it.

going to calm down about it and see what happens on sat appt less tired. thanks for advice.

chipmonkey, don't you just love malingerers? I once had to re-examine a child who insisted on wearing a frame from the optical with demo lenses in it while she sat behind the phoropter!

chipmonkey · 29/09/2006 21:23

A little girl came in to me once complaining about not being able to read the blackboard in school. She sat up on the chair and before I had a chance to say a word, she began with :
"Now, my Nana has pink glasses and I like them but I don't want brown glasses like Stephen because I don't think they'd suit me....." and went on for quite a while. She couldn't read anything on the chart but retinoscopy showed plano R+L and she was able to tell me that I had spelt her name wrongly on the computer which was quite a way away from her!
They are mostly fashion-conscious little girls!

pointydog · 29/09/2006 21:50

get her a pretend pair, see if that solves it. They're great fun to play with.

Then she can pour a glass of ribena for wine, use the shower attachment as a telephone and use a pen as a cigarette - that's what I used to do

jabberwocky · 30/09/2006 00:44

lol at your fashion conscious girl, chipmonkey. It is much more prevalent in girls, that's for sure!
