To wonder why there isn't more resource being thrown at Ebola?

There are now reports this outbreak could kill a million people in West Africa. It could mutate. Countries like Spain cannot contain it properly.

I don't understand why countries have been so slow to react. It could have been controlled so much easier had we responded sooner. Now we seem to be dealing with a catastrophe for Africa. What if it spreads to India? It seems likely to hit most countries, even if contained.

It seems unbelievable we have slept walk into this.

The antibody/serum thing sounds promising??Confused

TheLovelyBoots · 08/10/2014 13:13

It would be kind of silly for a pharmaceutical to invest a lot of money in a drug that's not profitable. Does anyone on this thread do their job for free?

TheLovelyBoots · 08/10/2014 13:13

The antibody/serum thing sounds promising??

I believe it was 100% effective in monkeys. Are you talking about Zmapp?

DaughterDilemma · 08/10/2014 13:15

The US government is funding the research. No loss to the pharma.

DaughterDilemma · 08/10/2014 13:16

I think Zmapp costs too much and takes too long to produce in any great quantity.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/10/2014 13:21

I think at the moment the limit on zmapp is down to producing it. It's grown in tobacco plants and clearly that takes time. Of course its only been used in a very few humans too, so its not known how effective it will be in the more general population.

AuntieStella · 08/10/2014 13:23

This article from The Independent says that global stocks of zmapp are now all gone, and it takes months to make.

It's an unproven drug. The article also says that the two Spanish missionaries were treated with it and both died.

DaughterDilemma · 08/10/2014 13:32

I hope the human antibodies work. It sounds like the obvious solution.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/10/2014 20:13

We have been kindly given a new ebola topic from mn so that all of the discussions, which have pretty much been sensible can be gathered in one place. Hopefully it wont be needed for too many months. More of an explanation here and mn say that as long as owners of threads are happy they will move threads into the topic.

Thomas Duncan, the man in Dallas, has died. His case seems to be one of a catalogue of errors, the perfect storm if you like.
