Taking St John's worst whilst on hormonal contraception

I posted this on Chat but just spotted this section and thought people might know a bit more here.

I know you're not supposed to take them together as it makes contraception less effective, but is there any other reason not to take them at the same time?

I mean is it just a bad idea because it makes the contraception less effective or is it actually potentially dangerous or unhealthy to take them together for another reason?

If someone had the implant for instance and started taking St John's wort while she still had the implant it wouldn't harm her would it? It would just make the implant less effective therefore it would be a idea to abstain from sex or use other methods of contraception whilst she's taking it.

But I assume that once she stops taking st john's wort then the effectiveness of the implant would go back to normal. Isn't that how it works?

Perhaps you could go and have a chat with the pharmacist at your local chemist's. Quite a few of them have consulting rooms these days.

I remember being told once that lots of people think that herbal remedies must be safe, as they are a natural product rather than a manufactured drug, but a lot of them contain very powerful chemicals, so it might be best to ask for professional advice.

I would get advice as it is contra indicated with hormonal contraception. Something about the absorption so would make it less effective. Not sure how it works with an implant rather than taking a pill. Best to be safe as you could end up pregnant.

I know that it makes hormonal contraception less effective but afaik that's the only reason why you shouldn't take it whilst on contraception. I don't think it's dangerous to take them together, at least I've never come across anything that would suggest it's dangerous. Don't take my word for that though.

Your best bet is to speak to a pharmacist.
