Eczema near genitals in 2 yr old?? Is this possible?

Still trying to sort poor dd out...sorry to bang on.

Have tried thrush creams (last weekend, seemed to help but not cleared), then worm treatment (Ovex, on Monday night, plus hygiene stuff), but three days later still same (mild) degree of itching. This time the pinkness is very slight and on the outside of labia - before it was red and around vaginal opening.

She does have eczema on her face, around her mouth, at the moment - any chance it could be eczema? Can kids get it there?

I feel such a twit, going round in circles trying everything..she's not suffering much, ATM, my main concern is diagnosing her in case its something I should do something about (eg repeat worm treatment or continuing thrush cream or changing washing powder or or or...)

bump, please?

have you been to the gp?

Elibean · 28/09/2006 18:46

Yes, on Monday...he thought worms were unlikely (but only on basis that I hadn't seen any in her poos over several days of potty-gazing, and several MNers said that wasn't reliable). He thought it might be a touch of thrush, and gave me a cream called Timodine which is antifungal and antibacterial. Seems to help for a bit, but not cure the itching.

ie helps as in reducing/removing redness, so looks normal in morning - then gets red/pinky again after naps or bath.

yes, dd has eczema there (at the moment)

we have stopped washing her stuff with ours - it goes in separately. Doc gave us canesten HC just in case there was thrush there (but no sign of it at all) - we let her run around naked as much as possible. The bath seems to make it worse so just quick showers - this started in August and finally, it's starting to look better now.

I had to go and speak to the school about it because she was literally scratching all day!

texasrose · 28/09/2006 18:55

Hi, I have a dd with severe excema and she has certainly been affected in that area, poor thing.
You could try using aqueous cream as a soap substitute to clean the area and then dry it properly. I'd suggest going back to the GP about creams as you'd have to be v.careful with steroids down there. Excema can get worse in hot / creasy areas like elbows so it might be excema. You could try letting her go round bare bottomed at home (as long as she doesn't scratch, in which case cover her up).
Also...watch out for if she scratches her parts then puts her hands in / near her mouth. You never know, there might be a link between the two areas.
Distraction is one of the best things for kids with excema, esp. if she scratches.
HTH! It might not be excema, but hope this helps anyway.

bless you foxinsocks - that sounds like it might be it sorry your dd has it too, though.

Most noticeable for my dd is its worst in bath or just after. Will keep up the canesten/timodine.

Holidaymum · 28/09/2006 18:57

Ok! My dd gets excema there too so it is possible, surprised the gp hasn't suggested it though

foxinsocks · 28/09/2006 18:58

your poor dd - it is nasty because it looks so uncomfortable! Dd also looks all swollen around the bit in the middle (where the clitoris bit is - sorry to be graphic) and I think that is from all the scratching.

I find dd improves massively when we don't bath her - I'm not sure if it is the heat or the water aggravating it.

You could try aqueous cream as texas suggests - this worked for us last time but unfortunately isn't doing the trick now.

Is there any staining/discharge on pants? My dd had this and the GP took a swab, and she actually had an infection. Short course of antibiotics (once bacterial infection proved), some soothing cream and complete ban on soap, bubble bath etc and she was cured. she has mild eczema and is allergic to all mineral/petroleum based eczema treatments, baby oil etc. We use aqueous cream and plain water. Very short baths/quick showers. All my children were terribly allergic to persil, and any sort of fabric conditioner. It is a very difficult situation, and embarrassing for you. She couldn't have pushed a bead or something in there? It does happen! Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions all, am taking them on board. I just haven't had a clue which way to go next, and was getting pretty confused - worms? thrush?? eczema?!?

The only one I haven't tried treating is eczema, so fingers crossed.

Nothing pushed up there, but she's only about 6 weeks out of nappies and did do a fair bit of fiddling for the first couple of weeks, so maybe infected or scratched herself.

Not using soap in the bath (except shampoo on hairwash nights) but have done for last couple of mornings as washing her bum first thing in case of threadworm eggs, as per instructions. She said it stung this morning, but was grumpy anyway so not 100% reliable info!

If it WAS worms, could they possibly reappear less than three days post Ovex??
If it IS thrush, how long should Canesten be kept up before deciding it isn't?

But reading your posts, I think maybe it is eczema...moves around a bit like eczema does, flaring up here and there at different times.

All I have is Doublebase and 0.5% hydrocortisone, and I haven't used either. Doublebase, do you think?

OP posts:
Elibean · 28/09/2006 19:29

Littlefrogs, no, no discharge.

OP posts:
texasrose · 28/09/2006 21:21

Doublebase should be okay but I'd check with a HV or GP first.

Elibean · 28/09/2006 22:14

Thanks, texasrose. Ended up putting a bit of Canesten HC on the inner areas (seems to be most soothing so far, whereas the other one the gp gave me seems to irritate her) and leaving the outside bits, as they looked ok again this evening.

Try a handfull of porridge oats (in an old pair of tigthts)in the bath,if it's eczema the oats help to soothe the skin. good luck & try not to worry about it.

wrinklytum · 28/09/2006 23:16

Hi Elibean. My ds has eczema.I found blitzing up porridge oats in a food processor and adding a cupful to his bath helped. Also have heard people on mn swearing by "Aveeno" products for eczema.Hope your LO is ok soon.

Elibean · 29/09/2006 09:38

pandrop and wrinkly, thanks - have heard of the porridge in bath thing before, but had totally forgotten about it: great idea, as its in the bath she usually feels it (and will enjoy having porridge mixed in her bath, though bet she tries to eat it!).
Will try that tonight - that, and not worrying

If she is only 3 weeks out of nappies it could be washing powder that is agrivating things. maybe worth a try of washing her pants in something like Surcare.

Elibean · 29/09/2006 14:05

More like 6 or 7, but yes, someone else suggested that on another thread I started when it all kicked off - might be worth a try! Thanks for mentioning a brand name, wasn't sure what to look for in shops. Might also go and check the link someone (foxy??) gave me before, worth covering all bases.
