soya milk, is it bad for you?

I just read on an allergy thread that soya milk is bad for you. This is pretty worrying as both myself and my Ds love it and drink it more than cows milk. I had a quick scan through the web and can only find articles suggesting this. Does anyone have more concrete info or experience to back this up?

Hi, I completely disagree with the idea that soya milk is bad for you. My DD was allergic to cows milk and drank soya milk for the first two years of her life - the only criticism I heard about soya is that it contains sugar whereas cows milk does not. You can now get low sugar soya milk (Alpro) and the way I see it there is more goodness in soya milk than there is in squashes, coca cola etc etc and far less damaging to your teeth! My DD had soya milk prescribed to her because she simply couldn't digest cows and anything that contained cows or normal formula milk - if a GP is happy to prescribe soya then it can't be that bad for you can it?!!

i think there is lots of natural oestrogen in soya milk which can be detrimental to health? could be wrong though

sure loads of people drink it when they dont really have to

AFAIK soya milk is ok, yes it had added sugar but cows milk has plenty of lactose which is a sugar. I occasionally drink soya milk in a latte because I like the taste but also because milk is mucus forming and I get sinusitus sometimes and end up bunged up if I eat too much dairy products. So I'm not 'allergic' to dairy but I know it affects me badly so I occasionally choose soya milk.

yes, I really like having a soya alternative especially when ds is a bit snotty! I guess the answer is not to drink gallons of it as water is best for thirst, but I do have a problem with dairy so I'll have to take me chances, thanks for the comments
