Has anyone's toddler had the new meningitis vaccination yet?

I'm assuming ds4 will be called for it anytime now as he is 21 months old.

I am thinking of declining it though, but wondered if this is wise. None of my other 4 kids will have it so wondered what the real benefits of ds4 having it will be.

So have any of your dc's had it? Reacted to it? Is it really worth having?

do you mean the pneumo vaccine? if so dd had it @7months. no reaction or problem. personally i would rather she had the vaccines than the illnesses

QueenEagle · 27/09/2006 23:25

Yes I mean the new vaccine that has been introduced for all under 2's.

Of course, a vaccine is always better than the actual diseases, I know that. But is there a benfit to only one of my 5 kids having it? Isn't this vaccine for the bacterial meningitis? What's stopping my older kids getting it?

DD had it today. Did the usual squawk when she got pricked, but has been fine ever since, and went to bed quite happily. I've been told that it will help prevent ear infections, as well as some strains as meningitis.

I guess whether to have immunisations is a matter for personal choice, but I'm pretty much in favour of all of them from a herd immunity pov. (Just my own opinion, obviously)

I'll post again if she has any unusual side effects or anything. HTH a wee bit?

Macdog · 27/09/2006 23:27

sorry, don't know. i only have 1 dd. why not ask hv/practice nurse if you have concerns. wish i could help more

QueenEagle · 27/09/2006 23:29

s'ok macdog. If ALL my kids were in line to have it, I would take them to have it, no problem. Just wondering idly if there really will be any major benefit seeing as he will be the only one of my kids to have it.

my ds (22mo) had it and was fine.

I think younger children are more likely to get pneumococcal meningitis and more likely to suffer complications from it, so it's worth vaccinating your youngest and not the rest imho.

hunkermunker · 27/09/2006 23:44

Yes, have it for him.

Under twos more likely to get this form of meningitis. And it can be fatal

CarolinaMoon · 27/09/2006 23:52

and when it's not fatal, it's very likely to result in permanent brain damage

QueenEagle · 27/09/2006 23:53

Ok, I'm convinced.

Didn't realise about it being more prevalent in under 2's.

I'd definately have my son immunised, but as he is 2 years and 4 months old I don't know when or even if he will be offered it.

I wonder who makes the decisions on the age limit for vaccines, how much difference would 4 months make to the immune system of a toddler?

QueenEagle · 28/09/2006 00:09

BROWNY, I was thinking the same. ds4 is 21months, so only 3 months off being not eligible for it.

I think I'll telephone my health visitor tomorrow and ask her if there are any plants to include older toddlers. I'll post if I find any information out .

My DS had the vacine yesterday. He was born on 14.9.04 and the nurse said the cut off point is 10.9.04. Children born before this date won't be offered the vacination. So far he has had no reaction to the injection.

schneebly · 28/09/2006 08:11

DS2 had it a week ago and has been fine. Worth getting IMO.

foundintranslation · 28/09/2006 08:13

ds had the Prevenar (pneumococcal vaccine) in a course of three starting at 6 months. He did find it painful but only briefly (this is the child, though, who didn't notice his second 6 in 1 at all ) and there was no reaction, not even a temp.
Do have it done, amyjade can testify how devastating the illness is

Bellie · 28/09/2006 08:45

dd had hers on Monday and has been running a temp since Tuesday - she has also been sick a couple of times, but seems to be fine in herself iyswim. I am still happy that I got her vaccinated though

izzybiz · 28/09/2006 10:23

It is possible to get this jab privately, if you have a just over 2, and youre worried.
My Dd had it before it was introduced, my Gp ordered it in for me, i had to pay £55 per jab, she had 2. Worth every penny.

eidsvold · 28/09/2006 10:26

both miine have had it - been routine here in Aus for a number of years.... dd1 had it as part of a catch up program and because of her heart defect she is classed as an at risk child.

neither child had a reaction to it.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 10:28

DD is having hers on Monday. A friend's DD had pneumococcal meningitis just before she was 2. "luckily" she was only left profoundly deaf.

littleducks · 28/09/2006 10:44

It is funny how the system works with regards to cut off dates, baby one week younger than my dd had it with 4month baby jabs two weeks after my dd had the baby jabs at the same surgery, but i suppose they have to start somewhere.

CheesyFeet · 28/09/2006 11:11

I'm watching with interest to see whether over-2's can have it. DD is 2.3. Have you heard anything yet Browny?
