What does dental sedation feel like?

I have had a long-standing phobia of teeth but have to have a wisdom tooth extraction and coronectomy.

Due to the risk that I will be agitated and have a seizure during the procedure (being done at hospital) they are sedating me.

My other fear along with teeth and having seizures.. is sedation! I hate the idea of being out of it and not in control of my body/speech.

So what does it feel like?

I had a tooth extracted under sedation, and can't remember a thing about the procedure, or coming round.

My first memory is of my husband trying to manhandle me into the house Grin

I was sleepy for a few hours afterwards, but I am apparently unusually susceptible to the affects of sedation. I was eating shepherds pie later that evening with no problems.

trainersandaches · 30/09/2014 21:29

Does it make you kind of fight against it?

I just "fell asleep" when I had all 4 wisdom teeth out under sedation, felt a bit woozy after, came home and slept until the morning after (pretty normal for me after any kind of trauma, I like to hide under my duvet).

Had jawache the next day but didn't go to work so was able to just watch TV in bed and generally chill.

Nope.. one minute you are sitting there, all terrified (I'm phobic due to having Trirgeminal Neuralgia and some teeth unecessaarily pulled out before diagnosis) and the next... it's all over and you can't remember a thing. It is brilliant! You feel nothing and remember nothing!

Justgotosleepnow · 30/09/2014 21:38

I had Valium for wisdom tooth extractions. Marvellous stuff. No wonder why people get addicted to the stuff!
Could have taken all my teeth out and I wouldn't have cared less.
Totally happy space cadet. I thought I was lucid, but was talking nonsense apparently.

OddBoots · 30/09/2014 21:39

My dd (aged 11) had 4 teeth out under sedation a few weeks ago, she dozed off peacefully then was a very happy lovey-dovey 'drunk' when she woke up - she loved it.

trainersandaches · 30/09/2014 22:19

Eek maybe it won't be as bad as I fear...

You won't be aware while it's going on and you won't remember anything afterwards.

xenzani · 01/10/2014 00:01

I must be the odd one out as I hated sedation. Had it twice and hated the lack of control and room spinning for the few moments it took before I ended up coming round after the work was done. Second time I had it, the same as before but with the added 'benefit' of coming round crying and not knowing why.

On the plus side, I have no memory of either extractions.

I am a person who has never been drunk nor further then a bit tipsy as I hated the feeling.

vjg13 · 01/10/2014 22:22

I found it ok, heard the dentist ask for a scalpel but It didn't bother me! Also had an amnesia effect and don't remember actual procedure. Slept for about 2 hours after and made no sense according to my husband.

Cindy34 · 01/10/2014 22:33

I don't remember. Seriously I don't remember around a 24 hour period. Thinking back on it I can remember some bits of going into hospital but not a lot, suspect most memory of that is from the previous hospital visit for the xrays they did beforehand.

The person who drove me home said I was perfectly fine telling them which way to go and quite chatty (which is unusual for me).

Sedation is interesting. Don't plan on doing anything for 24 hours after it and have an adult around at all times to stop you trying to do things because "you feel fine". After a few hours sleep, I tried to get up and walk downstairs. I made it but then felt very strange, similar to low blood pressure. Maybe it was. So lots of rest afterwards and stay in bed even if you feel well enough to get up, keep resting.

trainersandaches · 01/10/2014 22:36

Eek some of these accounts are odd! Cindy did you have IV sedation?

OP posts:
IrenetheQuaint · 01/10/2014 22:36

I had it a few years ago. I remember being vaguely aware someone was hammering something vigorously into my jaw but not caring at all. Afterwards I was a bit confused and dribbly. But really, it was fine.

Cindy34 · 01/10/2014 22:36

You feel the needle go in but that's it... 1,2,3 and you're out it.

Thinking about it, probably a bit less than 24 hours as had my op around 11am and I was ok the following morning, suspect I may have had something to eat late evening but I don't remember.

Cindy34 · 01/10/2014 22:39

yes, I had IV sedation in Maxiofacial (or whatever it's called) dept at hospital.

I was very nervous about it but looking back on it, it was the best thing to have done. Remaining teeth better now the rotten ones have been removed. Still get moaned at by dentist every 6 months.

TheOldestCat · 01/10/2014 22:40

Had it twice. It's fine, really. I was ok to go home on the train (DH doesn't drive) and although I was a bit sleepy it was an easy recovery both times.

Only bad thing - apparently I gave a speech to everyone in the waiting room about how marvellous the sedation was. Oh dear.

Cindy34 · 01/10/2014 22:42

Trainers - how much work are you having done? I wonder if there is any connection between the amount of extractions and the affect it has in recovery period. There must be some connection as your body has to adjust. Some I guess adjust better than others.

fluffydressinggown · 01/10/2014 22:43

I loved it. I remember them telling me it was going in and I felt drunk for like 2 seconds then it was all done and I was in the recovery room. I was well enough to go for a coffee the next day with my friend (she drove!!!)

Cindy34 · 01/10/2014 22:46

You really are not going to know how you react until you have it, so stop worrying. Get it done, have someone with you for support.

TrousersSchmowsers · 01/10/2014 22:50

I have had conscious sedation for dental work 3 times and I fucking loved it. Nervous the first time, as I did have gas a few times when a child and I can remember fighting that. But this was completely different. Quick injection, then count backwards from 10 to 6 whilst feeling extremely relaxed, go bye-byes, wake up in the chair hearing it's all done and feeling slightly in love with dentist, and home to a DVD box set and an afternoon feeling dopey and happy and relieved it's all over!

By the third one I actually put stars and smiley faces around it in the diary Grin

TrousersSchmowsers · 01/10/2014 22:53

Ha ha TheOldestCat apparently I make grateful speeches during sedation/anaesthetic, too.

minkymuskyslyoldstoaty · 01/10/2014 22:55

may i just ask, on this subject has anyone had sedation via a mask inhalation. ie for someone who is terrified of needles and can't have an injection to administer it.
thanks

TheOldestCat · 01/10/2014 23:15

Glad I'm not the only one, Trousers!

Think the inspiring and uplifting impact of my speech was somewhat dampened by the wodges of bloody cotton wool sticking out of my mouth....
