Has anyone's baby had the rotavirus vaccination?

DD2 had her first lot of jabs this morning. I declined the rotavirus one because DH and I haven't talked about it yet (she can start it next month if we want).

I'm not sure whether it's necessary - it's just a stomach bug. HV said it's because of the number of babies being admitted for dehydration. DD1 ended up in Sick Kids with a vomiting bug when she was a few months old so I know what that's like, and I understand that it uses a lot of resources for something that can now be prevented.

My biggest issue is that it's a live vaccine so can mean that baby will pass it on to us. I have a rubbish immune system, and also don't need a toddler with D&V. So I'm not sure what to do.

Just looking for experiences with the vaccine.

it would be exceptionally rare for anyone over 5 not to have had rotavirus, so the risks of you catching it are really small. The vaccine is really to avoid those trips to the hospital with your infant/toddler.

(mine are too young to have gotten the vaccine)

No I rejected it. It's a new one (not offered with DD1&2) and comes with a verbal warning about the chance of a twisted gut.A twisted gut is far harder to treat than simple d&v.

Basically I thought it was a vaccine not for the good of the child but to save money on hospital admissions. The nurse while she couldn't verbally confirm was very emphatic about me having valid concerns.

DS has had it (due 2nd dose next week) and no one mentioned anything about a twisted gut!
They did say it could be passed along in his stool so to take extra care with hygiene when changing him. That was all.
He was fine, I've not heard anything negative.

I took it, regretted it at first because the smell of his poo after was horrendous and I wondered what I'd done to his previously EBF digestive system.

Then every one of us in the house had a 24 hour pooing/throwing up bug that was totally incapacitating - except him - It went through the family at virtually 6 hour intervals as the next person caught it, I can't imagine how he wouldn't have caught it unless the vaccine had worked.

DD has silent reflux, and was ill for two weeks after the first rotavirus vaccination with stomach ache and diarrhoea. HV said it was unrelated to the vaccine so we went with the second dose, after which the nurse said she hadn't been sure about administering the first due to the silent reflux. Wish she'd mentioned that beforehand! I'd probably avoid it for any child with digestive issues in future.

eminy did they give a warning to watch out for red jelly in dcs poo? I dug into that a bit more and she admitted it was for twisted gut.

Pickle It's possible you caught it from the baby as it's a live virus avid can be passed on to other people. Rare but it happens.

Thanks for the replies. I'll talk to the nurse about reflux as the baby might have it.
