Help with heavy periods

CheeseandGherkins · 29/09/2014 15:11

I've always had heavy periods but this one seems heavier than usual. It's my 3rd one since having dd4 by c section 11 months ago but my first 2 were very short and light. I came on yesterday and (sorry for tmi) am very heavy, using super plus tampons as well as night towels and flooded during the night. I'm currently filling the tampon and towel every hour or so and I'm exhausted. I'm still breastfeeding day and night on top of this.

Is there any reason my period is this heavy? I'm going to see my dr but they have no appointments for over 3 weeks and wondered if anyone could help in the mean time. I'm finding it very difficult to cope with as I daren't leave the house for long or go far at all.

sorry to hear this but you ought to be given an appt within 48 hours or on the day at most surgeries. Why is it a 3 week wait?

You can try taking Ibuprofen meanwhile which should reduce the bleeding.

Thanks. Well here it's either a few week wait for a bookable appointment or it's an urgent on the day one after a triage on the phone. It isn't urgent though. Just not a great system.

Try taking ibuprofen, it slows the flow

Actually I'm not sure you can take that whilst B/feeding?

A three week wait is unacceptable anyway; I would look into registering now with another GP practice.

Such bleeding should always be reported to the doctor; this is urgent enough to have a day appointment after a triage on the phone.
I would also suggest you keep a symptom diary as this will give the gynae clues, you should also have a gynae referral.

As someone who has really horrific periods Id say it does warrant being on the triage list. The nurse/GP who calls you back may be able to write you a prescription rather than you needing an appointment.

Unsure though if you're able to take any of the usual drugs they give if you're BF

I'm not sure if I can take that, I think so?

3 weeks is usual unfortunately and no other local drs are taking on new patients...

I do have pcos which possibly is a cause but this is awful at the moment. I barely slept at all last night due to worrying about leaking, getting up to change tampons/towels and breastfeeding dd4. I might ask for a blood test too as I'm worried about low iron, I was low during and after pregnancy and previously had iron infusions so hoping to avoid anything like that.

Thanks for the replies.
