Does anyone suffer with IBS? Ive had it since last year but very mild. These last few weeks its been getting worse and I had to come home from work yesterday the pain was that bad. Im so down its unbelievable. Am wondering if its because Im stressed thats making it worse (we've just had a holiday and the pain all but went).
I just feel like Ive got a knife in my upper tummy and Im not coping very well. Last night I got in the bath and cried, really sobbed, for no other reason.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the Aloe Vera tip, my mother takes this and recommends it so will pick some up this weekend.Kjaysmum, thats interesting about the yoga, to be honest I never thought about the exercise point of view, keep me informed about how you go with it please.Im willing to try lots of new things and change my life for the better.I NEVER want pain like this again and hate feeling so down.Im having some work problems which I think add to the stress but I dont dislike my job.I work full time and Ive got family problems (not with my partner) so maybe everythings got on top of me - have been analysing everything while I've been off work ill!!
It's made a lovely change being able to spend the week with my daughter and take her to nursery, a great tonic. I vow to change my life, hence having the coil out, and make things less stressful if possible.
Thats my morning bleat out of the way! Also, having everyone on here advising and sharing has worked bloody wonders, thanks tons.

well Lush, the personal practice in yoga is really helping me, I have a hospital appointment on Oct 13th (the big check up) and have been getting more than a little nervous about it, hence my stress levels rise....I really believe mine is more stress related than anything. So what do I get from the yoga...I swing between constipation and loose bowel movments, no point in being shy on IBS thread I reckon!, the yoga really helps when I feel blocked, there are exerices which are almost instant in their actions, but also over a period of time I think it helps me control my stress levels. I can't eat these days if my two year old is playing up, it's like my valves pack in. Sorry to be dealing in guess work and not facts but as you know we are learning as we go about this condition and I'm trying to find out if the pain under my ribs is a valve problem. I went to an osteopath who said the valve at the end of my colon (diagnally right ftom your belly button) was not opening properly and he could manipulate it and it worked but only whilst having treatment. Hope this is relavent it's my story of what is happening to me, I haven't been diagnosed with IBS yet but can't help feeling it's all connected. Will be getting Aloe Vera too soon so lets hope it helps us.

I too have been a sufferer for years. Nightmare, hospital, repeated Drs trip etc etc etc.

What has worked for me is: probiotics (yakulty type things) everyday, really important to get some healthy bacteria into your gut. Then at night time I take Valerian, I read about it in SHE magazine "If Stress Targets Your Tummy" it was so interesting and it definitely works. It said

"The nerve supply from the emotional centre in the brain and the gut are intimately linked - nerves come down from the brain into the spinal cord and out to the gut" says a consultant gastroenterologist at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Dr Ann Walker recommends valerian, a natural tranquilliser that has a calming effect on the digestive system.

I use the brand called Lichtwer Pharma.

I have cut out milk, alcohol, and too much heavy cream on puds or on ice cream cause me a problem, this has made a huge difference.

I drink peppermint tea by the gallon, tea bags go everywhere with me, I only drink water and the pepp tea, juices etc just burn straight through me.

I loved texasrose's suggestion of the fish and ginger, you need to eat really blandly until you get your tummies equilibrium back. Really simple, no sauces, type stuff, ready meals out, just pure fresh simple things.

Hope that helps.

PS: meant to say that a consultant i saw says hypnotherapy is very effective.

I have just started going to see an acupuncturist for my periods and she is also pointing/working on my IBS.

But as it is IBS something has scary as needles being inserted every so often, may not be as nice as someone doing reflexology or hypno on you!

Definitely exercise, it's almost as though you are marching and beating it out of your system. It stops your insides from being sluggish, even if you just go for a real power walk if you're not up to running/jogging. A swim is nice and calming.
