periods and testosterone!

Hi, I've just got back from the doctors and found out I have a high testosterone (2.8? no idea what that means!).

The reason I went to get this test done was because I have extremely painful periods to the point I throw up every month and can't get out of bed! They are also extremely heavy! They have always been heavy but the pain has got worse and worse!

The doctor has said to me this could be as a result of polycystic ovaries, and the high testosterone level now means I have to go for a scan.

Everywhere I look online it says high testosterone levels mean no periods / irregular and this is definitley not the case for me!

I was wondering if anyone has had PCOS and had heavy periods? The doctor also mentioned to me the chance of infertility, I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this as I'm very confused!

Thanks!

I have high testosterone and my periods are on and off, heavy and light...

U need the scan first, the doctor can not just say you maybe infertile.
Even with polysistic ovaries, you can still conceive

I have PCOS and have had heavy periods in the past (that was due to endometriosis).

I would suggest you start keeping a daily pain and symptom diary if you do not already do so. This will give the gynae further information; a GP is simply not the best person here to deal with this issue. I would no longer be seeing this particular doc anyway.

PCOS does not cause painful periods to arise; it may well be that endometriosis is the root cause of the pain you are suffering. Heavy periods can also be caused by endometriosis as well. Given that you cannot get out of bed either due to the pain I would think endometriosis is the likely cause.

I doubt very much that a scan will show anything because endometriosis is not detectable on scans.

Insist now to your GP that you are referred to a gynae asap if this has not already been done.

Would it show on a vaginal scan?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 28/09/2014 16:36

No on vaginal scans either. Endometriosis if it is present is usually diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

Endo can be partly diagnosed by scans these day depending where it is.I had a scan some time back ( not for endo) and was told there were signs of previous adenomyosis.
