Medised/calpol dilemma

Pook · 08/04/2004 14:29

DD has a v. high tgemperature which the doc thinks is the result of a viral infection, also has conjunctivitis. So is currently taking a cocktail of calpol/nurofen (obv. not at exactly same time - staggered) to cope with the fever, and antibiotic eyedrops for the conjunctivitis. My query is, doc said probably her congested nose at the root of all the symptoms. I have medised here, which is paracetomol and anti-histamine, and wondered whether I could substitute medised for the calpol, since it has decongestent and also helps with sleep, or would it be better to stick with the calpol/nurofen mix as suggested by doc? It just didn't occur to me when at the surgery yesterday, to ask this.
Also - I know that probiotics are recommended when oral antibiotics are prescribed, but does this apply to eye drops, which obviously don't effect gut? Probably I've answered my own question there.

Pook, i don't know the answer but why don't you call N.H.S Direct and they'll be able to tell you

Hope she's feeling better soon+

Pook, could you not phone the surgery and ask the doctor. Or do you have a good pharmasist nearby ? My local one is very helpfull and will answer queries over the phone.
Wishing your dd a speedy recovery.X

Thanks for advice. I think I'll ring NHS direct - pharmacy too far and surgery hellish to contact as constantly engaged 0 there's a lot of it about.

If it were me, I would exchange the calpol for the medised - particularly at night.

I honestly think dd would benefit from a really good night's sleep. Oh...and I probably would too!(Honestly - no ulterior motive whatsoever) Was restitched (i.e. episiotomy aaaaarrgh) on Monday and am feeling just a little zonked.

Yes pook it would be fine to substitute the medised for the calpol, though maybe only for bedtime as it may make dd sleepy during the day,and i dont suppose you want her sleeping all day as she then wont at night.

kiwisbird · 08/04/2004 20:45

I have used the medised only at night instead of calpol at Doc's telling it is paracetamol based, he also advised me not to give nurofen too close either to maximise different effects and benefits of ach drug and minimise any possible sideffects (tummy upset etc)
HTH
xx
Hope dd is ok soon
