Third lot of antibiotis and still got cystitis.

I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to me/has any advice? I've had cystitis about 3 times over the last ten years and it's always gone pretty quickly after taking antibiotics. I am travelling at the moment so not in the uk, which is a nightmare. Two weeks ago i felt the start of cystitis(a few days after sex), so i took a sachet and it seemed to go. Stupidly i didn't take anymore sachets. It then started to come back so i went to the docs(in France) and was prescribed Norfloxacine. It got better after 24 hrs but then got worse again a couple of days later. After completing the antibiotics i went back to another docs and he prescribed Ciflox. It started to feel better but the symptoms were still lingering. I should add here that the only symptom i have is the urge to pee constantly(no pain or burning). So i went to another doc(now Portugal), and he has given me more antibiotics, Metronidazole. I am now on day 3 of taking these and although it started to feel much better initially, it's now starting to feel worse again. I'm finding it all extremely difficult to deal with. The doc said to come back tomorrow if it hasn't gone and he will give me something for Chlamydia, as he thinks it could be that. He can't test my urine as i've been on so many antibiotics. Has anyone else been in this situation? Any advice would be much appreciated.

It could be something you're eating or drinking. I have chronic cystitis with uti's and I can only drink Evian water when it's bad.

The rest of the time I have to avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, fruit juices etc. I only drink water now. Spicy foods can also make it worse.

shell99 · 24/09/2014 17:37

Thanks hiddenhome. I've only been drinking mineral water and staying away from everything else. It could be something i'm eating but i'm eating quite plainly at the moment so wouldn't even know what to try and cut out! I've read that sugar can be quite bad so i've cut that out. It's just odd how the cystitis seems to be feeling better and then worsens. Thanks for your advice though.

I would question if it's definitely cystitis? For example interstitial cystitis gives same symptoms but doesn't require antibiotics. Have you had your urine tested again? It may also be that you need a different type of antibiotic

shell99 · 24/09/2014 17:45

I have been reading a lot of stuff online and am scared senseless that it could be interstitial cystitis. I'm really praying it's not. I asked the doc to test my urine but he said he couldn't as it would be affected by all the antibiotics i'm taking. I'm now on my third different type of antibiotic, so without testing my urine i'm not sure how to know if and what antibioic to take?

Wait until you've completed the course and see what happens. If it's a deep seated infection it will take longer to shift.

Take a look at d-mannose on the net. It's good for ecoli infection and stops the bacteria sticking to the bladder wall.

Don't start to panic, there's lot you can do even if it is IC. Have a look at their website at the foods list.

I take Uva Ursi to deal with my infections when I get one. It also calms the urinary tract. You can't take it long term.

See if you can get some barley water locally (Robinsons). It's not just squash but it's got crushed barley in it and used to be used for cystitis before antibiotics. (I'm not that old but my mum is!)

Best of luck. Hate cystitis

shell99 · 24/09/2014 19:37

Thanks everyone. I think i may have to stop reading things online as i'm terrifying myself.

I know that interstitial cystitis doesn't respond to antibiotics, so does the fact that it initially disappeared after starting them, and then re-appeared but gradually got better hint that it can't be IC? Or am i just wishful thinking??

Not necessarily. Nobody really knows what IC is or what causes it and there are a wide range of symptoms, including infection.

lemonmarmalade · 24/09/2014 20:37

I had cystitis that didn't respond to antibiotics (trimethoprim) and ended up in hospital for 3 days with a kidney infection. Watch out for any pain in your back.

My urine was tested whilst I was on antibiotics, all the docs I saw insisted on urine samples.

Mrsbaconandbeans · 25/09/2014 06:46

In my case antibiotics made the interstitial cystitis worse Sad once you get a proper diagnosis it can be managed Smile hope you get better soon

Lulabellarama · 25/09/2014 07:04

I had similar many years ago. It turned out to be post infection inflammation. I got over it eventually (after several weeks) with a very low acid diet and even did a fast on nothing but pear juice for 2 days.
It's not come back since but was hellish at the time and scared me silly.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 25/09/2014 09:44

It's complete rubbish that your urine can't be tested if you've been on anti bs. It can, and it should be sent away for culture too. And then another urine sample should be sent away a few days after you finish them. They prob just haven't identified the correct bacteria yet.

shell99 · 25/09/2014 11:32

Thanks for all the advice.

Am going back to the docs today and will insist on a urine test. It's so difficult being out here in Portugal, doc doesn't speak much english and the 'surgery' was extremely basic. He said he thought it might be chlamydia and so was going to give me treatment for that if these current ab's didn't work. Never have i hoped so much that i have chlamydia!

Lulabellarama - How did you find out what it was in the end? I have some anti-inflammtory's. Do you think it might be worth taking those?

It's hideous. drink load of water, nothing acidic, no caffine, alcohol or fuit juice. Yes take anti-inflammatories and paracetamol. Drink those sachets regularly. Sit in a warm bath with some bicarbonate o soda, I really felt this did help. sometimes it can be caused by inflammation rather than infection so can take a while to clear up. In the end I ha a 6 week course of AB to get rid of underlying infection. Good luck x

shell99 · 27/09/2014 17:11

Thanks NewName, that's reassuring to hear. I have noticed a big improvement since i've been taking the anti-inflammatories. I still have the urge to pee, which is pretty much there all the time, but it's not so strong as before. I finish my 3rd lot of antibiotics on monday and should have results of urine and chlamydia test on wednesday. Will be interesting to see what happens.

No advice really but just wanted to say you have my sympathy. I had cystitis symptoms for about a year after having an operation. Antibiotics helped a bit but it always came back. Finally gp referred me for a cystoscopy and then of course it all cleared up just before I went to hospital! In the end the verdict was that the initial infections had led to bruising which made it feel like I had cystitis but I didn't. It did clear up eventually and to deal with it I drank loads of water, and cut back on tea/cola/acidic drinks. A friend also recommended taking probiotics which has stopped me getting it as much. Hope it all gets sorted.

E.coli and postcoital cystitis. Tired of antibiotics. Suggestions?
