B12 deficiency & injections

KatyMac · 23/09/2014 21:34

I'm on loading doses for B12 deficiency 1 injection a week for 6 weeks, then a blood test, then I see the GP again

I always feel a bit down after the injection, the next 3/4 days I feel quite good then I crash & feel much worse than normal approaching normal by the time my injection is coming round again

Is anyone else doing/had the injections - does that sound similar?

I was very ill with b12 deficiency, when I first had injections they would make me sleep for 24 hours. A year later they do not affect me so much. I use the sublingual spray daily which helps.

Have they helped you?

Bump for other peoples experiences

I do my own injections so can do them as soon as first signs start (insomnia for me), it also means I can do them on a day that suits me.

KatyMac · 24/09/2014 15:07

How often do you do them Lonecat?

I have to see the practice nurse for mine. I started on every 12 weeks but felt so ill the last 2 weeks she changed to 10 weekly. I am now feeling like I need it about a week before I'm due so I'll have a talk about going 9 week.

I didn't realise insomnia was part of b12 deficiency - explains a lot. I've suffered with it
On and off for years but nobody has connected the two before.

Lonecatwithkitten · 24/09/2014 15:28

I inject roughly every 8 to 10 weeks though now my mixed connective tissue disease is controlled again it's longer.

Thanks - it's useful to know how other people react

Can I ask what levels your B12 were when you started your treatment?

Thanks

KatyMac · 24/09/2014 21:27

Mine were 105/151 over 3 tests over a year with the high red blood cell thing & the large red blood cell things too (but I can't remember the names of them Blush)

OP posts:
KatyMac · 24/09/2014 21:27

Sorry that was 150/151

OP posts:
Lonecatwithkitten · 24/09/2014 21:29

Mine was right down at 73.

KatyMac · 24/09/2014 21:34

Mine were never tested before - & we wonder if my CFS/FM/IBS may have been this all along

Goodness me - these are low! Mine is 245 which is a lot higher than you.

Hope you continue to get better.

Lonecatwithkitten · 24/09/2014 22:58

Orange I feel good at 300 so that is my treatment goal to maintain.

RockinD · 25/09/2014 12:13

Actually you need to be no lower than 500 to be sure of avoiding the possibility of neurological damage.

In some other countries, notably Japan, where the incidence of Alzheimer’s is surprisingly low, the range starts at 500.

Is Insomnia really a symptom of B12 deficiency?

Ive got Pernicious Aneamia and have 12 weekly injections. Ive suffered from Insomnia for years...on a good night I get about 4 hours and on a bad night no sleep at all.

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/09/2014 17:42

For me the insomnia is an expression of the depression I lie awake worrying about the most trivial things. Have a B12 injection stops happening within in 24 hours.
I think you have to remember depression is a symptom of pernicious anaemia and depression itself as a wide variety of symptoms and insomnia is one of these.
