Antibiotics/Probiotics

Just caught the tail end of a programme about antiobiotics/probiotics on Radio 4 yesterday. You can Listen Again via the BBC website, it was Case Notes, R4 at 4.30pm Weds 7th April. THe last part I heard seemed to be saying that probiotics are far from proven beneficial for adults and that expensive "yoghurty" drinks are not effective. The bit I heard did say that probiotics are good for children with diarrohea (sp?) or gut problems.

Really? Bugger, I'm doing the Yakult thing every day as I was hoping it might help my DS's eczema.

There are good studies showing that when pg women take probiotics during the last trimester and when breastfeeding, it reduces the risk of their children suffering allergise by up to half.

I found that one capsule did nothing for my ds's eczema but two (adult dose) cured it almost entirely. Maybe there just isn't enough in yoghurt.

toddlerbob, assume you've read the threads on fish oils because i seem to remember them having a good effect on eczema too...
I know I've said this before, but I was amazed at the junk in Yakult and its friends when I read the list of ingredients but then someone else said that certain substances (sugar?) is required to activate the probiotics. Don't take my word for it though!

ds is too young for fish oil, but I use flax seed oil as it is rich in Omega 3. I mix ds's probiotic with pureed fruit, presumably the natural sugar in that does the same job.

There's some research going on into prebiotics. i think they help prepare the gut for probiotics or something. Ds1 was meant to be taking part in some research on it at Reading Univeristy, but I think they have funding problems.

Actually thinking about it he may be taking something like that anyway. His nutritionist has put him on sacchromyces ( a non colonising yeast). It's meant to help reduce candida and improve the gut environment for probiotics.

Aptamil follow-on also contains pre-biotics.

one of my friends is a experienced Nutritionist and she says that probiotics are definitely good for rebuilding immune system in children BUT it has to be the right kind. THe Yakult type drinks are pretty useless and they have a lot of sugar in them. You can buy powdered probiotics and mix into cold milk/yog and they are much better.

Was going to start a new thread, but the topic was already there!

If you take probiotics to counter the problems with antibiotics, do you wait until the course of antiBs is finished to take probiotics, or take them at the same time? If it's best/ok to take probiotics concurrently with antibiotics, do you take the proBs at the same times as the antiBs, or slightly different times of day?

DD has a UTI, .

gloworm · 03/08/2004 19:45

you can take both...just at different times of day. if you take both at same time of day the antibiotic will just kill of the probiotic. then continue taking probitics for a while afterwards.
