Sorry Twig, couldn't find your old thread.

I finally went and had mine done this morning, a year late . It was completely and utterly fine, not painful or shrivellingly embarrassing.

GET IT DONE, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE !!!

NomDePlume · 26/09/2006 12:02

Good on you, Huw

i went for mine last week too

they have a new REALLY soft plastic brush thing they use, its not a wooden lolly stick any more, so its not sore like it used to be!

fattiemumma · 26/09/2006 12:06

As having suffered 5 years of tretament for pre cancerous cells i can whole heartedly stand behind NDP on this one.

yes you have to gt your fanjo out and yes its a little bit blush inducing but i assure you that if you end up as one of the unlucky ones that miss an ealry diagnosis then the treatement you will have to go through is far FAR worse.

thankfully i was caught very early on and have had regular treatement since.
My DD is a miracle becasue of all the treatment i have had to have....if i hadn't have had my smear in the first place she may never exist.

It really is that important.
so go, right now....book your bikini wax then phone the DR!

I didn't see the 'implement' used to today, but I've seen those brushes, like giant transparent mascara wands. Nurse told me that they were going to start using disposable speculums in the next few weeks. She said it'd reduce the chance of cross infection but it would make the smear more awkward because they are just not as sturdy and user-friendly as the steel ones.

fattiemumma, glad to hear you are on the mend.

Never heard it used for a girl

i had to read that bt twice as well NDP.

Thank you. i still have to have regular smears, every 3 months and have had a couple of larger mass' removed but i am ok. they have decided now that if i continue to get the cells (pretty much every time i have a smear i have laser surgery) they wil consider givingme a hystorectomy. theyhave held of for this long as i am still very young (26) for this kind of surgery.

I have been to see the consultant so often now that i honestly believe if he saw my face he wouldnt havea clue who i was

fattie (can you change your name please ? I hate typing that when I'm talking to you!). I went for my fist smear at 17 as part of a termination (). When I phoned the doc at almost 20 to book in for another one I was told that I shouldn't have one because they are not needed until 25 and it would be a waste of everyone's time and NHS resources . Needless to say I went beserk and she booked me in sharpish . Your story just goes to show that testing after 25 can often be too little, too late

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 26/09/2006 12:22

first, not fist !

I need one done. I don't mind them in the slightest, however I'm not ready to have anything stuck inside me. Still feeling odd down there after having 2nd degree tears with ds2 5 weeks ago. Will defo get one done when I feel can face having something poked in me.

opinions vary.

they dont send out reminder letters until you are 25 or have had a child i think but the risk is increased assoon as you start having full intercourse so really (imho) they shuold be mandatory for anyone over the age of 18.

Lol at the name change. i can never think of anything to use, and besides its hard enough for people to remember me know...if i change i will be invisible again

mysonsmummy · 29/09/2006 00:01

when i went to book mine (overdue) they said it had to be so many days after your last period- how long is it? thanks

fattiemumma · 29/09/2006 00:04

5days after the last day of your period ( i think)

its so that they are able to see everything clearly as (TMI) everything will have been cleared from yo system

serenity · 08/01/2007 11:49

OK I know this is a bit of an old thread, but I just wanted to hassle anyone else putting it off. I finally went and had mine done this morning - only 3 years late

JARM · 08/01/2007 11:55

had a letter this morning "inviting" me - surely i dont have to accept the "invite"?

What confused me was the enclosed leaflet saying they are no longer swabbing women under 25, yet send me a letter and im only 24!

Nip · 08/01/2007 11:58

Thanks for this thread its reminded me that i MUST go (i've never been).

Still worried about going but know i must.

dinny · 08/01/2007 12:02

haven't been for four years - am I overdue on? (am 33)

serenity · 08/01/2007 12:39

I don't know tbh. I'm sure I last had one just after DS2 was born, so late 2000, and the nurse said I was due to have one in 2004 - so it sounds like you should be due one soon, rather than being overdue. However, I'm sure my Mums GP does tham every 5 years.
