do you use body lotions or oils on your toddlers?

my mum never was one for Oil of Ulay etc or using body lotions etc and so I grew up not really knowing about body creams etc until I was quite a bit older but I've still never really got into the habit of using creams regularly and my skin, consequently, isn't as soft and smooth as some of my friends.
Should I be using cream daily on my 18 month old DD now and get her into the habit for life or is her skin too young etc to need it?
TIA

We use Aveeno on DS1 (2.5) and nothing on DS2 - DS1's skin has always been drier than DS2's though.

What's your DD's skin like now?

If her skin needs something on it, use a pure oil from a health food shop, something quite light. Check out Burts Bees, they do a lovely apricot oil or J/A/S/O/N oils. Or else use olive oil. I used this on DD2 when she was born as her skin was quite flakey. Her skin is lovely & peachy now .

her skin doesn't look as though it needs anything on it, it's quite soft and still lovely and baby-skin like.

I use 123 baby lotion everyday after bath on my dd 16mths, she loves it, lies back on the changing table and give her a bit of a massage, she helps rub it in on her belly - find it helps relax her before bed......

I bought a cheep reusable atomiser from Superdrug and mix olive oil and water and use it as a moisturising spray for DS and me after baths. No mess, very environmental and also very good.

does the olive oil stain the clothing monkeytrousers? how long do you leave it to sink in before dressing?

I use olive oil and massge my children about 1-2 times a week - even dd1 who is 6 still likes it. They all have gorgeous skin. After they are massaged (I have done it since they were tiny babues after their baths) we wrap them up in a warm towel and all have stories on the sofa for 15 mins before jammies. It never stains though I do wash jammies and the towels at a hotter temp than my other washing. But they do have lovely skin.

this s ounds lovely - i'm going to try massaging ds tomorrow night (25mths)...

monkeytrousers · 26/09/2006 22:02

Doesn't mark the towels and the spray is so light it is absorbed almost straight away. Just give it a shake and off you go.

I mix it in those travel spray bottles. You know the ones I mean?

iarose · 26/09/2006 22:06

I haven't used cream on my kids but had a special moisturising bath oil when DD's skin got a bit flaky a while ago - think it was oilatum. That really softened her skin up and got rid of the dry patches.
When I was little i used to be smothered in talc after the bath!!! can still remember the smell like it was yesterday!!! does anyone use that anymore?

Furball · 26/09/2006 22:10

talc is quite nasty apart from inhalation which we've always known about, there has been pointers into maybe a cause of cervical cancers. Much safer to use cornflour.

mckenzie · 27/09/2006 14:18

thanks all. i shall try the olive oil in the spray i think. I massaged all the time when my two were babies but when they started to wriggle and get restless i stopped. perhaps they're over that stage now and I should try again.

dd1, age 3, has dry, sensitive skin. i use a cream made by a local herbalist for children that is wonderful!

been using that + their 'soap' since she was a baby.

now using it on dd1, age 9 months.

Gobbledigook · 27/09/2006 14:21

I don't put anything on the boys' skin
