Natural Constipation aid?

My dp suffers from difficult to pass stools and piles. He's been advised to take something like fibrogel but can't as he can't have aspartame. Any suggestions of alternatives? Anyone used Psyllium tablets?

Movicol here (diverticular disease and recently had a partial obstruction with a flare up) and glycerine suppositories. my GP prescribes both for me now and nothing else gets my bowels movig, sadly!
