Lost feeling in half my face?

Hello, I wonder if anyone could diagnose me? For a day and a half I've had the oddest feeling in half of my face. From under my eye to my neck on the left side, I've lost feeling, it's like I've been anaesthetised. Inside my mouth is also odd on the gum on that side, aching a little. I've felt slightly headachey and also every hour or so been getting very hot, although I don't go red when I get hot, and this soon subsides. I was taking co-coda of for back pain for 10 days, and am nearly off these now (one a day) so wondered if it may be a side effect of that? Any ideas please?

Try googling trigeminal neuralgia and see if that fits? Doesn't sound like a side effect of co-codamol, TBH.

You've lost sensation in your face and think mumsnet is the best place to get advice? Get thee to a doctor! Pronto!

pinkfrocks · 13/09/2014 17:16

How old are you? Worst case this could be a mild stroke. Do you have pain in your arm or 1 side of your head?
Have you lost the strength in your hand or arm on that side?

It could be Bells Palsy but you really need it checked out. better safe than sorry- you ought to go to A&E now.

RubyGoat · 13/09/2014 17:17

A&E. Now. Hope you are ok but better safe than sorry.

MrsBungle · 13/09/2014 17:17

I think you ought to go to a and e. Could be a TIA. You need to be checked.

pinkfrocks · 13/09/2014 17:18

Signs of stroke

kinkymouse · 13/09/2014 17:18

Goodness, I think I would be seeing a doctor pronto.

TheRealNightsWatch · 13/09/2014 17:22

I would definitely seek medical advice now also. Let us know how you get on. Flowers

VashtaNerada · 13/09/2014 17:24

Could be a migraine - but yes get it checked quick just in case.

morethanpotatoprints · 13/09/2014 17:28

OP go to the hospital immediately.

You need a diagnosis. My dsis had something like this, is sounds very similar she had Bells and unfortunately has never fully recovered but has improved immensely.

Go now, do not pass go, do not collect £200
Hope you are ok.

I had similar symptoms last year, it was post viral neuralgia. Gp prescribed strong anti inflammatory tablets and it went within a week. Worth trying to get an ooh appt to rule anything else out and to get some medication.

Le1890 · 13/09/2014 17:50

I had Bell's palsy and this is what happened to me. I went straight to a&e though as at the time I didn't know of it was a stroke. Thankfully not. I was out on steroids and was back to normal within 4 weeks.

Please go to a&e.x

Goldenlab · 13/09/2014 20:00

Just back from a and e. I was seen immediately and the GP rang through to the stroke consultant. As I suffer from migraine they decided its likely to be a migrane and said the symptoms of migrane can change when one is pre menopausal. Thank you all for your kind thoughts and help with this.

pinkfrocks · 13/09/2014 20:13

Glad you are okay but if it doesn't go away then go back and have more checks. Drs have been known to get it wrong and you don't want to take any risks.
I have to be honest and say I've never heard of migraine in a pre menopause stage giving facial paralysis - but what do I know!

Take care and don't be afraid to have it checked again.
Did they not scan you for signs of a stroke?

RubyGoat · 13/09/2014 22:47

So glad you are ok. Go back if your migraines change as they can mask other problems. I saw this happen to someone, it wasn't a migraine. He did get to A&E just in time.

PinkFrocks - I get hemiplegic migraines & the symptoms can exactly mimic those of a stroke, & I am certainly not yet menopausal. Mine were initially precipitated by going on the pill - hormone changes do seem to have an effect on migraines. I get one sided paralysis & shooting pains in face & body, difficulty with words, aura, vomiting, horrific headache, the works. They are not that common though & I had to have investigations for stroke & tumours before this diagnosis was made. Hence my urgency in recommending the OP go to A&E.

GobblersKnob · 14/09/2014 06:40

I had this about seven years ago, it lasted just over eight months in the end and was just awful, saw doctors, consultants, had all kinds of tests, no-one ever worked out what it was, then it just got less and less and went away.

An still slightly scared of it coming back, hope your clears up quicker than mine Thanks

Goldenlab · 14/09/2014 08:51

Thank you all for your advice. I got to bed early last night, slept right through and have woken up right as rain this morning, face has regained feeling. Will go and see my GP if it returns at any stage in the future.

I get this with migraine. Sometimes with horrendous pain, nausea and visual disturbances. Sometimes just the numbness (or one or more of the other symptoms). As PP says, it is known as hemiplegic migraine and for me it can take up to a week to get full sensation back.

It could be something else of course,my diagnosis isn't necessarily yours, but it does sound similar to my experience.

takingstock · 14/09/2014 08:58

I had a similar thing before I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. It went away once they got the thyroxine up to the right dose but sometimes comes back when I'm very tired.

topsmart · 14/09/2014 22:43

I'm so glad you're ok! Sorry if my first post was a bit harsh, just couldn't bear you hanging around if it had been urgent. Well done for getting checked out.

Hannahabbott · 14/09/2014 22:56

Thank you to the posters who mentioned hemiplagic migraines. I've had one of these but was never convinced it was a migraine and not a stroke as the symptoms didn't fit with a typical migraine. Now I know what it was, thank you.
