Constant thirst in toddler???????

My ds is 21 months and is constantly thirsty, have tried saying no but he gets himself so upset, have also tried only putting small amounts in his cup. His nappies can't cope with the amount he is drinking they are constantly wet and can't last through the night or nap time.
Is this a phase or should i be concerned?

Constant thirst can be a symptom of diabetes. I don't want to worry you, but you should take him to the doctor.

Medulla · 24/09/2006 09:01

I would agree with belgo, go and see your GP. Hopefully it's nothing but it can be a sign of diabetes.

chlochlo · 24/09/2006 09:02

I've looked at the symptoms and he doesn't have any of the others also he is well in himself.

Take him to the doctors even if he doesn't have any other symptoms. If it's nothing, you will be reassured; I'm sure your GP will take your concerns seriously.

He's got a cousin who's insulin dependent diabetic so it did cross my mind but he ended up in icu when he was diagnosed.
Didn't know if it was just a stage.

If nothing else it will put your mind at rest by hopefully ruling it out.

belgo · 24/09/2006 09:12

I hope it is just a stage. Constant thirst was the major sign that my cousin was diabetic. Considering your family history of diabetes, I would certainly take him to the doctors (sorry to repeat myself but this is really important)

Medulla · 24/09/2006 09:15

Belgo is right, make an appointment chlochlo

I thought as much i just didn't want to seem paranoid cos its in the family.
It seems i'm always at gp with ds at moment and winter hasn't even started yet.

chlochio - hope this might reassure you but my dh who is a GP says that a 21 month old baby with IDD would be MUCH sicker than your ds is, unless the thirst only started today. A baby developing IDD has no glucose reserves (which adults do have) and so get very very ill within a few hours, no more than 12 or so, of insulin production in the body failing. It takes much longer in older children and adults.
This does not mean that your ds does not have some form of diabetes or other metabolic disorder which is causing the thirst, but he is unlikely to be insulin dependent and need injections. He does recommend you see your own GP as soon as you can.
Hope this helps!

Check with our GP to put your mind at rest. I did with DS2. Your description matches how he was exactly. I think it was a comfort thing and thankfully he has grown out of it now. I got him a different beaker so he couldn't see how much was in it and gradually cut down on the amount of water he had. He would still drink all of it straight away but then I'd be ready with something to distract him when he started to ask for more. Nappy thing is huge PITA though!

fussymummy · 25/09/2006 00:44

Is he eating ok?
Could be that he has a sore throat.
Tend do drink a lot with that.
Must be checked for diabetes though.

chlochlo · 25/09/2006 20:14

hi
inhalers make the throat dry sometimes and can cause thirst.using a spacer is supposed to take that away but it didnt for us.my eldest drank loads when he was on a blue inhaler.when he was a toddler he would drink bottle after bottle after bottle and when i made him use a cup he slowed down.i tried to make drink times with meals and morning/bedtime and just a small cup inbetween those times so he wasnt constantly wet.i would check up on the diabetes.my grandad was diabetic so i got my boy checked, especially with the thirst but he was fine.they checked his urine for it.good luck.i hope he comes back with the all clear once you've got him checked.

Inhalers do make you really thirsty as someone already said.
The montelukast granules also come in tablet form for adults and when i was given them i've never drunk o much in my life.
I felt really ill on them as well. Sick and dizzy.
Stopped taking them after a week.
