Liver cyst - anyone with experience? Worried sick.

I had an ultrasound scan on Saturday to look for gallstones, but the sonographer wouldn't say anything other than that she couldn't find any stones. Cue much worrying and a thread on here where some lovely people reassured me. Phone call yesterday from the doctor, results show a 2cm cyst on my liver, I need to go for a CT scan. He didn't give much information, just that he couldn't tell me anything without a scan, which I should hear about in the next week. I am in a complete mess. I'm an anxious person anyway, but this has sent my anxiety rocketing. I understand the results coming quickly, as my Health Trust has employed people from other areas to work weekends, to clear a back log, so I suppose they write the reports immediately and send them to the surgeries, as they go back to their usual hospitals after the weekend. I am worried that they seem to want the CT scan so quickly and have now convinced myself that it must be a secondary cancer, even though I've not been unwell, other than the occasional stomach/highup abdominal pain (every 4/5 months) that led to the gall bladder scan. I would be so grateful for any information as my imagination is running riot. TIA.

Mine was also purely diagnosed by mri only. No biopsy needed.

lucy1964 · 29/09/2014 18:12

do both the ladies with FNH have annual MRIs to keep a check on them? I am going to ask about contraceptive pill as a cause when I see consultant Wednesday, as I have been on this 25yrs plus. Also take Levethyroxine for under active thyroid. Wonder if any connection with this also.
Baw70, I hope you are bearing up, thinking of you , hope u r ok x

dennant · 30/09/2014 21:09

Mine was diagnosed in showerhead, I was supposed to have a scan after six months, but was pregnant then so couldn't have it done. I have to reschedule now baby has arrived but they told me there was no hurry. The consultant I saw was plotting in the scan just as reassurance really. He kind of said to me "do you want to come back in six months and we can scan it again?" Totally putting the ball on my court, he didn't really see any importance in scanning my liver again as he was happy. More for my peace of mind I think. I can imagine thst if the cysts haven't grown I will probably not be invited back for a scan again.
Defo ask about the pill, Thats what made mine grow they think. I am going with the copper coil now as the only non-hormonal contraceptive method for me.

dennant · 30/09/2014 21:10

Showerhead?? WTF? Stupid spell checker!, was supposed to say "May last year." No idea how showerhead got in there, sorry!

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 30/09/2014 21:21

yes the pill made mine grow too.

Im still six monthly MRIs at the moment. its been seven years now.

Hopefully I will be moving to yearly mris after this next one.

Thank you, here goes then appointment with specialist this afternoon, feeling uptight and nervous x

LuluJakey1 · 02/10/2014 22:46

Good luck tomorrow OP. Hope it is all sorted out and no problems. Let us know how you get on. Flowers

dennant · 03/10/2014 08:03

How did you both get on?

baw70 · 03/10/2014 15:18

Saw a junior doctor this morning who asked some questions, had a feel of my abdomen and then she went to see the consultant briefly, to check that a biopsy was necessary. The upshot is that I had bloods taken today, will have a biopsy taken in the next fortnight and my notes will be up for discussion in the weekly unusual cases meeting. Fame at last! At present, they don't know what the things on my liver are, so an ultra sound guided biopsy is needed. So no further forward knowledge wise than before. Thank you for thinking of me x

Baw

When I was first diagnosed with the liver lesion I had the ultrasound which was what found it. I then had an MRI.

The consultant called me to say 'we have never actually seen this type of lesion before, but what we do know from looking at it is that it is benign'. I asked about a biopsy and he said no it's best to leave it alone. It appears to be something you had when you were born I.e congenital. It's only been discovered because of the gallstones scan.

I had a hard time coping with this thing particularly as they couldn't identify it as such just that they were certain it was not cancer. So I then had a follow up 6 months later to check it and there was no change. A few months after that I asked to see a gi consultant for a second opinion. He also agree with the first consultant. He took bloods one that particularly shows liver tumours and it was negative.

It's been over 4 years by now and I've had various ultrasounds etc because I've been pregnant since and had ultrasounds for kidneys etc and never been mentioned again.

I hope you get answers soon.x

baw70 · 03/10/2014 17:38

Thanks Le1890, it is hard isn't it when you don't know what you're dealing with x

So sorry you did not get more answers today, the unknowing/doubt is definately the worse bit. I learnt little more than i found by opening the letter , it is focal nodule hypaplasma lesions and whilst he said association with pill, do not have to come off it, and they should clear when i get to menopause (47 now) erm not willing to risk a risk so I am coming off it now. doesnt want a follow up mri (which I would prefer for reassurance) but I aint getting it. he says the condition should not cause pain but when you look on british liver websites does say some people have pain , so other than to have one more blood test thats it go away forget about it and ignore the pain "your normal", i am happy nothing more think follow up could be more . Hope you have confidence in your consultants baw and they do all they can to get you a happy speedy conclusion x

baw70 · 03/10/2014 18:30

That's great news lucy1964, you can breathe a sigh of relief x

Biospy done. Apparently there are 3 lesions. Still no mention of what they might be, so it's waiting for the results now.

lucy1964 · 12/10/2014 08:16

Hi Baw glad you have got it done, have you any idea how long your results will take? Cant be easy hope you are doing something this weekend to try to take your mind of it x

lucy1964 · 17/10/2014 17:13

Any news Baw? x

baw70 · 18/10/2014 22:36

Not yet, but I did a silly thing and turned the phone off. I was in such a state and waiting for the phone to ring was tipping me over the edge. I was making myself ill and in a constant state of nausea and tears. I thought that if they couldn't get me on the phone, they would send a letter. Well I haven't had a letter and will absolutely have to leave the phone on next week. It hasn't helped that different people gave different time-scales for the results. The consultant's secretary said 10 days, unless it's urgent. Other doctors at the hospital said up to a fortnight, regardless of if it's bad news or not. So I just don't know. I'm just going through the motions of life at the moment :(

lucy1964 · 19/10/2014 17:58

Oh dear, think i might ring my gp if i was you as i presume they would also send details there and if they have not heard they might be able to ring hospital to chase things up bearing in mind your levels of anxiety. Hoping though no news is good news. All things crossed for you and hope you hear something this week x

baw70 · 19/10/2014 20:39

Thank you lucy1964. I haven't phoned my GP and don't think there's much point, as they did tell me at the hospital that they themselves would contact me and I would have to go back to discuss any results in their clinic. I've found it very difficult not to have a HCP that I can ask questions of. The GP is nice enough, but just said that he couldn't be of any help, as he just didn't know what I had, which is fair enough. Conflicting information over the timescale of results has also just made my anxiety worse.
