Ovulation or ibs pain? In agony!!!

Hey, was wondering if anyone can help. I've mentioned this to 5 different drs over the years but no one can give me an answer. Halfway through my cycle I get pain in my lower abdomen, it starts off just mild niggly pains that steadily gets worse each day for about 5 days and by the 5th day I'm in agony, the next day it starts to ease off then completely goes away. I've been told it's the ovaries swelling or it's caused by fluid coming out when the egg pops out and one dr said it's the hormones at the time of ovulation trigger my ibs. I was advised just to go back on the pill. I was on the pill for a few months and sure enough it stopped but I decided to come off the pill last month as I didn't like how it was making me feel and so again 8 days (last tues)into my cycle the pains started, by Sat/sun it was really sore and by sun night it was easing off but last night it seemed to start again and I had to use a hot water bottle, my tummy was tender to touch and I was sore on the left hand side and right across my lower back. This morning it was my lower back and tummy that was sore so I took pain killers, buscupan tablets and drank hot water and it helped a lot although I still feel a bit sore, kinda like I'm away to get a uti. No one I know gets this, I don't even get pain like this when I've got my period. I mentioned this to a new dr a few months ago and she just kinda shrugged and said take painkillers, or go on the pill. Help!!!xx

You should be referred to a gynaecologist by the GP and be evaluated further to see if endometriosis is present. Many women who actually have endometriosis are wrongly informed that they have IBS.

Any pains that are cyclical in nature and get worse up to and/or including menses should be properly checked out by a gynae.

The pill puts these type of issues in abeyance but once off it these symptoms do return.

I would now start keeping a daily pain and symptom diary as this would give the gynae clues. Many GPs are simply not up to speed at all when it comes to such issues so it is not altogether surprising that they have not been able to help.

Go back to the GP and insist on now being referred, you've been given the run around long enough. You will need to be persistent in order to get answers.

Thanks so much for your reply, I'll start keeping a diary and get back to my gp. Me and my husband are always careful so I don't need to be on the pill and I don't want to go on it just so this pain stops each month which is just masking the problem.x
