WARNING omeprazole

Recently had blood tests for diverticulitis, gp rang 3 times in panic saying hemoglobin low which means I must be bleeding internally, spent 2 weeks in utter panic thinking I had cancer, but saw consultant on Thursday who said convinced diverticular disease awaiting sigmoidoscopy. But during that check up asked about medication and when I told him I take omeprazole 40 And have done for about 8 years he immediately said B12 deficiency hence low hemoglobin and anemia, if you take this google it and you will see, he was really angry that I was not tested for this and will now be, why did my own gp not think of this and why was I not warned and regulary tested, instead of panicking me about internal bleeding even when I explained there is none, I do not pass blood from anywhere, periods stopped. So if you are feeling tired whilst on this get yourself checked as according to consultant dangerous if left.

If you have a low blood count you need to have internal bleeding ruled out, so having been referred is the right thing.

Is your Vitamin B12 low?

Checking our iron stores (ferritin), Vit B12 and Folate are standard investigations re low blood counts.

I hope your sigmoidoscopy goes well and gives you a reassuring result. Is there a particular reason whey you are not having a colonoscopy?

Omeprazole and other meds pretty effectively stop acid production in the stomach so of course after time there can be an effect on how well some things are absorbed. Not a single effective medication is entirely without unwanted effects potentially which is why the lowest effective dose should be aimed for.

Hi thanks for reply, yes bleeding ruled out, ferritin is ok, but was not tested for B12 having that done this week. What is the difference between colonoscopy and sigmoid as I have pain in left hand side does that make a difference. I am trying to wean myself of omeprazole but it is really hard

the sig only looks at the first 15 cm or so of the large intestine. it's therefore a shorter and less unpleasant procedure.

colonoscopy loosks at the whole large intestine. preparation for it takes longer and the procedure is a bit longer and more unpleasant as well, though for both sedation is usually offered.

both are not awful though and it's very interesting seeing your insides on the screen
