Reccomend a shampoo or treatment for DH scalp

It is itchy, flaky, has clumps of scabs/skin and all in all is rather nasty.

He wont go and see a doctor as in his words they are all a waste of time.

He has bad excema and migraines - often stress and excersise induced.

Can anyone help with any treatment suggestions - he wants something called Selsun (sp?) that will 'burn' his head but will sort it out. Not sure what this is?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure whether you can get Selsun any more. Anyway, burning it out isn't the answer.

Can you banish sodium lauryl sulphate from his life? That worked like a charm for me.

Roseformeplease · 05/09/2014 12:32

I have just got Betnovate from the Drs (it comes in a solution and works well) but, if he won't go to the Drs then the shampoos with Coal Tar (T Gel do an Extra Strength one) combined with Nizoral (to kill the thing that causes it) work well although you have to work out the right combination for you.

Also, have started taking fish oils after being advised to do this. Early days yet but that is supposed to help.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 05/09/2014 12:35

Selsun is an anti-fungal treatment but an old one (lots of resistance plus quite toxic), I think now there is something more efficient Nizoral (?). Both should be on prescription anyway (or were when my dad used them last). But it won't help him if it is not fungal or psoriasis. Not sure how it will fare with his eczema, tell him to man up and go see his GP?

Jinglebellsarenearlyhere · 05/09/2014 14:37

Thanks all - I'm so bored of trying to get him to the GP that ive stopped trying but now the flaky look is grossing me out I need to tackle this one.

I may have to force him - what a wuss he is. Its not that he is scared he just thinks they are all useless and what they prescribe never works - nothing to do with the fact that he thinks one pill and all should be cured, no need to make lifestyle changes, use different products etc etc.

ok rant over - will look into these products and see what happens.

My DS has had problems for years and tried all kinds along with various prescriptions from GP. We eventually found E45 shampoo to be the most effective and he is now using Milk Shampoo from a company called MooGoo and has not had any recurrence.

Try Nizoral shampoo. You can buy it over the counter. It's good for seborrhoiec dermatitis and eczema conditions. You have to stick to the instructions over a period of time to see a good result.

I've just bought this trial pack Philip Kingsley from M&S, and am finding it pretty good, after around two weeks of use.

I bought some Eucerin shampoo for my teenage DS ( I suspect he has psoriasis, there's a family history) I really don;t have confidence in taking him to the GPs though.
It does help, but he tends to scratch his scalp absentmindedly rather than because it's itchy

Might try Nizoral to alternate with it.

Had something just like this. I tried Coal Tar (which was quite effective but very drying) and moved onto Body Shop Ginger shampoo. It really was the biz, was highly recommended on here and I still use it occasionally just to keep things at bay. I really recommend Body Shop ginger shampoo. Search for it on here and you will find lots of recommendations.

specialsubject · 07/09/2014 14:00

Polytar is good - currently unavailable in the EU but can be ordered online from the States.

Following paragraph is blunt.

if he won't go to doctors make sure his will is up to date and that you know how all the finances work. Dandruff won't kill him but if he refuses to look after his health, he has a higher chance of not making old bones. Clearly a fair bit of scientific ignorance there too.

exercise-induced migraines are worrying.

dixiedoodle · 07/09/2014 14:10

Another vote body shop ginger shampoo here too. I had a dry, flaky itchy and sore scalp, tried loads of stuff, t gel, simple, faith in nature, Johnson's baby shampoo, oats in tights, just water, elemis nourishing skin milk as a intensive weekly treatment.... it was itchy, sore and my mum gave me some body shop shampoo for Christmas and hey presto not a discomfort to be had since then. I am on the second bottle since Xmas and I probably wash 2/3 per week and have shoulder length normal thickness hair - yay the body shop, only criticism is no conditioner. Good luck finding something that helps, scalp irritation is miserable Smile

Flipflops7 · 08/09/2014 08:54

Dixie, which Body Shop shampoo is this?

Flipflops7 · 08/09/2014 11:48

Sorry, I have reread :) ginger. I was part of the campaign to stop them discontinuing it! Dreading the coming months as both DH and I get eczema/psoriasis on our skin in winter only.

Jinglebellsarenearlyhere · 08/09/2014 12:55

Thanks all. I have some Selsun from over the counter at boots so we will see and then I will get some other bits from this list.

special I love your blunt paragraph - I may have to send it to DH to see if it prods him into action but doubt it. Ah well he is responsible for his own health ultimately not me!

Alphosil

I have it on prescription for psoriasis but you can also buy it OTC

LindaMcCartneySausage · 08/09/2014 14:23

I can really recommend Capasal shampoo. I think you can get it in Boots, if not then Amazon have it.

Capasal is coal tar based and smells a bit like stale cigarettes, but it really works. My DSis is a Dr and dermatologist and she recommended it for DS's horrendous cradle cap, which he still had aged 3. She said that's the strongest/ best over the counter one on the market.

Your DH will have to use it every day, but you only need a little. He should take time to really massage it into the affected area. After a week there was a noticeable improvement and it keeps all the flakiness at bay.

L'oreal Elvive selenium shampoo for men. This is THE best shampoo I have ever come across. After years and years of trying everything under the sun this is the only thing which keeps my scalp under control
