Hi , please can anyone put perspective on my worry, i went to dentist a month ago , check up and i pointed out a small white hard nodule against my wisdom tooth by the gum , not sore , he looked at it said it doesnt look sinister or presenting in that way , took x-rays pictures nothing found untoward in x ray he said and sent them off to be sure and give me peace of mind ...

i have to now go to see this chap now for a routine appointment for him to see it , i have now gone into melt down as suffer with health anxiety , i called my dentist again yesterday who has said agin this is just routine and they may just want to see for them selves , he still says he thinks its an overgrowth from my tissue and nothing sinister and its good just to get second opinion , he said he sends alot of referals off just as a precaution , he said has seen similar to my thing before not weekly but has and all was fine , i am just so worried now ...as this is how i get with this HA ...

has anyone any experience of this ? or can calm me down ....

thanks for listening

I have just had accupuncture for the stress and it definitely helps a lot. This appt was already booked but she offered me a free extra one on Thursday to keep me calm till Monday. I find it helps me a lot, I now feel sort of spaced out and woozy. I'll try for a sleep after lunch :)

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 09/09/2014 14:31

I love acupuncture too. Got mine tomorrow. Hope you get a nap. Smile

ballofworry · 09/09/2014 16:42

have never considered accupuncture know very little about it but would consider anything if would help with anxiety ....what does it involve ? obviously needles i know that much lol ..but thats it ...

hope you had a good nap thegrey i love a little PN mid afternoon sometimes .

My experience (not sure if it's typical!) is that first they take a history, feel your pulse and look at your tongue (!) Then you lie down and they stick little needles in you. Stings a tiny bit when they go in but it's not too bad. Then they leave you for a bit and then take them all out.

It makes me sleep much better and feel more grounded so could be worth a try if you aren't needle phobic. I think it's supposed to be great for anxiety.

ballofworry · 09/09/2014 19:56

thanks , sounds a little scary but if it helps thats the main thing , dont think im needle phobic , does it hurt ?

OP posts:
AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 09/09/2014 20:42

Hurts a tiny bit but much less than giving blood or anything like that. A tiny scratch. I don't find scary but my therapist is lovely, I think it's one of those things where you need to like and trust who's doing it. Smile

ballofworry · 09/09/2014 20:46

thank you will look into it i think , feeling a bit anxious again tonight first time sat down and thinking again , been packing all day more the same tomorrow ..

It really doesn't hurt at all. Maybe a tiny sting but afterwards you feel all relaxed and calm. She takes the history and asks what you most want help with. She then takes pulses in both wrists and looks at your tongue. Next she explains what she is doing and mine uses a measuring thingy a bit like one of those extending grabber things to measure the points. The needles are very very fine and dont go more than just skin deep. Sometimes she just locates the spot, puts the needle in saying,"breathe in" then takes it out saying,"breathe out". There is a little tingle as it comes out.
For anxity/stress she leaves the needles in for 15/20 minutes and keeps taking pulses and chatting. It really really helps.
It is great for my asthma too :)

ball this is one of the things I find really helpful when I've become convinced I have 'something'.

How much money would I bet that I have mouth cancer?

Despite the crippling anxiety I can be experiencing, quite often I have to admit that I wouldn't bet that much... Because really I know, that, no pain, no history, none smoker, dentist not worried, totally reasonable alternative explanation all add up to ALMOST CERTAINLY NOT the worst case scenario. Hope this can be of some help to you, its actually really changed me (along with a few other things).

Also, I used to think - 'the one time I relax about something, it will be the real thing and I'll have missed it'. Well that didn't happen.

thegreylady · 10/09/2014 07:41

PoI that has helped me enormously, especially the last sentence which is exactly how I feel. On my thread I received some useful information about other possible causes of my problem too.
I do worry about 'tempting fate' especially as the one time dh said "It will be nothing" when I had a mammogram recall, it was in fact breast cancer. This means he will never risk reassuring me now.

ballofworry · 10/09/2014 08:05

Thank you personof Flowers that has helped me x

Its so crippling this yo-yo feelings one min im rational thinking and put things in perspective, the very next i see something /read something /hear something or just my inner devil thinking in my head ( i know that sounds a little crazy ) and im off with this overwhelming fear and anxiety ... Sad

Just want to get past Tuesday this appointment ...and i hope things will settle [hm]

Hope everyone is ok today , more packing and distraction for me today x

But when the overwhelming anxiety kicks off, ask yourself again -

"how much money would I bet that I have mouth cancer?"

Everything you have? £100? £1?

greylady sounds like you had a horrible time. Was that really the one time your husband said "It will be nothing"? Or has he said it lots of times and been right?Grin

ballofworry · 10/09/2014 18:25

i will try ... x

Had a busy day today so only just getting back to the worry :) i have my free extra acupuncture tomorrow. You are right of course about dh although that was the only recall he was blase about. He had worried at two earlier scares and all had been well then that time he said cheerfully,"It will be fine." It wasn't. This time he won't say much except that he's not as scared as I am. That would be difficult anyway.

ballofworry · 11/09/2014 16:28

getting more anxious as days go on till tuesdays appoinment . Hmm

OP posts:
PersonOfInterest · 11/09/2014 20:44

Ok ball my recommended calming technique for today...

Imagine your friend had just described the symptoms you have, including what the dentist/dr said.

What would you think? What would you say to her?

Thanks
ballofworry · 11/09/2014 21:24

thanks POI , x

erm i guess id think , oh dear ok well if your dentist isnt to worried he knows best and hes probably being extra cautious as you worry ...

(that said im still doubtful )
