purple lumpy patch in dd's mouth - any ideas what it might be? I'm starting to worry a little...

I noticed this dark purple patch at the back of dd's (2 + 1/2) mouth a few weeks ago.
I have only caught sight of it a few times but it didn't look right to me.
She won't open her mouth for me that often so I'm not sure how best to describe it. It's about the size of a 20p piece, dark purple, raised and a bit lumpy.
Went to the doctors with her but she refused to open her mouth and so we had this horrid semi-comedy session with me trying to persuade her to open her mouth / manhandle her mouth open. It didn't work so the doctor sent me away telling me she had probably scratched it.
It's still there now a few weeks later.
She has not complained about it and does not seem ill in any way.
Any ideas wht it might be?
Any ideas how to get her to let someone look at it?
Here's hoping!

Is it inside her cheek? Could she be biting it?

Can you bribe her to get her to open her mouth for the GP? Chocolate or a toy to be handed over once she's co-operated?

sallyrosie · 21/09/2006 19:07

Not sure what it could be, but my DD will behave almost anywhere if promised a lolly. Alternatively just pin her down and use a tongue depressor. Good luck!

Rowlers · 21/09/2006 19:12

No it's right at the back of her mouth - behind her teeth so she can't be biting - it doesn't look like that anyway. Looks like it might have always been there IFSWIM.
Tried bribery - "If you open your mouth, we'll go and get some chocolate" etc.
She won't play that game sadly!

Not sure what you can do then. Tough one. Have you googled (possibly not a good idea if you're going to scare yourself half to death reading about horrific mouth lump type diseases). Jasper's a dentist, isn't she? She may have an idea of what it may be.

Thanks Marthamoo.
How's the Montana 6 obsession BTW??

We only managed to use it once this season Still think it's the Best Tent in the World though

Jimjams2 · 21/09/2006 19:26

Hold her upside down with a torch ready- her mouth should open automatically (I'm serious, we have to do with with ds1 when we want to see inside his mouth, now he's quite big (7) dh either swings him backwards over his shoulder, or we sit on the sofa and drop him backwards.)

marthamoo · 21/09/2006 19:28

I now have an almost irresistable urge to dangle my children upside down just so I can see their mouths drop open...never knew that, jimjams.

Rowlers · 21/09/2006 19:29

Ah, good idea. But will that work in the gp's surgery?
The gp already thinks I'm delusional....
I need a spy camera to take a picture as evidence I'm not making it all up!

Can someone - dh - go with you and help you? GP may think you're a little odd, granted, but it's better than worrying about it.

Actually, GPs should know stuff like that!

Jimjams2 · 21/09/2006 19:34

GP's are a bit of a nightmare as they start doing that "ooh we don't want to stress them" routine, although I have done it with my regular GP. I'd have a look at home though anyway- you can often get a decent nose around using this method.

sallyrosie · 22/09/2006 09:10

google 'lingual thyroid' - is it anything like this? the only idea I've had I'm afraid

Just take her back to the GPs, say that it is still there and that you need them to look at it using force if necessary. If you are comfortable having to restrain your child for them to look I'm sure they will be too. But they can't physically restrain them so it is up to you - maybe someone to help you would be a good idea?

sallyrosie · 22/09/2006 09:53

Also google 'oral mucocele'

ComeOVeneer · 22/09/2006 09:56

Where exactly in the mouth is it? Does she have all her (baby) teeth yet?

ComeOVeneer · 22/09/2006 09:58

If her very back molars aren't through yet and it is in this area it could be an eruption cyst. Basically a swelling of the gum above the unerupted tooth which is filled with blood so looks purple (similar to a bruise basically). It is harmless and will disappear as the tooth erupts.

Rowlers · 22/09/2006 19:26

Not sure if it's any of these things.
I have, however, managed (bribery through lollipop) to take a few photos where you can just about see part of it.
No idea how I get them on here though - anyone know?
