To ask how you survive the germ pit that is nursery?

Hi,

My DS has just started going to nursery. Naturally this has meant that he is in contact with more children and consequently more germs. I appreciate that it's unavoidable.

Unsurprisingly I'm catching them too. I'm now on my second cold in 3 weeks and I feel pretty lousy. I'm trying everything I can think of to fight them off. We are eating plenty of veg and protein. I take a daily multi-vitamin, plus extra Vit D and Magnesium.

Is there anything else I can do to ward off the germs?

I am afraid it is going to happen although eating a healthy diet is good idea.
You will probably find that when he goes to school he may pick up less, another time when they usually catch everything going!

You are both full of germs for about 6 months, then your immune systems can fight anything IME. Dd started nursery when she was 10months. She's been sick twice since she was about 18months old (chicken pox and tonsillitis), but the first 6-8months were tough.

Eugh, we're in the same position except DS has also had conjunctivitis and now chickenpox, about a month into nursery!

We've stocked-up on multivits and are eating as healthily as we can but still seem to be sharing in the joy that is the nursery germ-fest!

Par for the course I suppose but a total pita when you can't use the childcare you're paying a small fortune for because they got ill there!

Yup. We had 6 months of CONSTANT snot and coughs. Calpol and berocca are your friends.

Stick it out best you can for the first few months, and then it all starts getting better.
If you possibly can, loads of sleep, fruit and veg, and some exercise.

No help, just commiseration. We're just through month two and I'm currently fighting off a horrible cold that DD brought home. It's not fun! I just keep telling myself at least

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 31/08/2014 14:19

Oops.

At least it won't last forever and at least she started nursery in summer!

Awakeagain · 31/08/2014 14:21

I think I only combat this by being a primary school teacherWink
I get just as many germs and have built up quite the resistance over a few years!

My son started nursery when he was 10 months old in October. At the time, I didn't realise about the 6 months of coughs, colds and sneezes, so took him to the GP about mid-Dec, as it was relentless and I thought something was really wrong. My GP, lovely man, told me it's a well know disease, Startingnurseritis! And not to worry, it'll be spring soon Grin
