Nitty gritty comb - do you use it on wet or dry hair, and does it get old empty egg shells out?

My daugher's hair is riddled with old eggs, haven't seen any new eggs or lice for over 2 weeks. We've been wet combing every other night and seem to have got rid of the little bastards. But how do I get rid of these eggs, other than pulling them out individually which would take hours and hours. It's quite unsightly, the poor lamb

use the nitty gritty on hair with tons of conditioner, it's quite rough and will hurt any other way.

FlameSparrow · 21/09/2006 14:55

It does get rid of the old eggs

sandyballs · 21/09/2006 15:06

Excellent, thanks, I will order one. Is it worth getting the spray as well?

i didn't get the spray, you could try it! though someone here recommends tea tree oil spray too

yeahinaminute · 21/09/2006 15:32

Same as SoutheastAstra - masses of conditioner and the lovely nitty gritty comb - My poor DD looked like she'd been dropped head first in to a vat of lard - but it does work - then I rinse like hell and add some tea tree oil to the last rinse ... Good luck - and remember to check your hair too and the rest of the family !

I found the nitty gritty comb too harsh. Had much more success with this fantastic kit . The purple "bug buster" comb works well on eggs.

sandyballs · 21/09/2006 15:38

I'm feeling itchy just thinking about all this. Sheila - I've got that kit and although I found it great for getting hold of the live lice, the eggs still remain, maybe I'm not doing it properly.

Hi SB, do you use the purple comb, which has the finest "teeth"? Works for me but DS has blonde hair so maybe I'm just not seeing the eggs. Got me wondering now...

Know what you mean about the itching - DS has nits at the moment and I'm in a state of constant itchiness! I don't think I've caught them (keep trying the comb on myself - not easy) but still scratching.

sandyballs · 21/09/2006 15:47

Yep, the purple comb, facing the right way, like it says, but they still hang on for dear life. I'm pretty sure they are empty because they are quite a way down the hair shaft and are creamy coloured rather than dark. My DDs hair is dark so they stand out when you start examining her.
I'm thinking of buying some Hedrin on the way home from work this evening. I seem to recall someone saying that it loosens the eggs.

hedrin is great but very oily! that'll get rid of them

2plus2plus1 · 21/09/2006 16:30

Does nitty gritty get live eggs out - website suggests they do - But does it work?

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 16:34

yes it's different because the teeth are sort of spiraled so really gets inthere so to speak!

2plus2plus1 · 21/09/2006 16:36

But does it do what it says on the tin?

Spidermama · 21/09/2006 16:37

I find the nitty gritty oil really loosens things up too and its much easier to get stuff out if you use the oil. Sadly it costs about £300 a bottle but there you go.

2plus2plus1 · 21/09/2006 16:39

£300?

sandyballs · 21/09/2006 16:40

I've just ordered some and it's £10.99.

Sorry to sidetrack, but how do you know which are live? I have not seen any lice on DD, but removed about 25 brown eggish shaped things on first combing and then about 8 a few days later. Nothing last night (hurrah). Are the brown ones 'live' - do you think we need to keep going.

I feel so sorry for DD - she has long hair and is v. sensitive (aka drama queen )

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 16:49

i think the dead ones are white, brown ones are alive. nice

Spatz · 21/09/2006 16:50

Thanks southeastastra - I am a complete novice! I guess we keep going for the next week, or so, then.

southeastastra · 21/09/2006 17:00

i'm sure there are mutant nits out this year they seem to be everywhere! yes after first combing repeat 8 days later. hedrin is good too, but i still combed even with it!
