Migrane cures...????

desperatehousewife · 21/09/2006 11:37

Been getting them on and off for about 5 years now and not convinced that Migraleve is helping that much.

It can be quite debilitating and I'm going to go and see the doc soon about it as i'm getting them once a week on average at the mo.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice or useful tips?

thanks

Change your tablets. Not all migraine tablets suit everyone.

Are you taking your tablets when you first get signs? During migraine digestive system shuts down (which incidently is why you ofter get diorreah afterwards) so need to take tablets b4 this happens. Also take with fizzy drink as it breaks them down quicker.

Do you know your triggers/are you keeping a diary to work out why they are happening so frequently?

Not eating regularly and being dehydrated are 2 big causes of migraines.

HAve you had your eyes checked recently?

Sorry if you do all this - not intending to be patronising.

I used to take migraleve too, but it started to lose effectiveness. I now use dissolve in the mouth nurofen meltlets, but still have to just go to bed in a dark room.

foxinsocks · 21/09/2006 11:46

migraleve did nothing for me

you can now get imigran (used to be prescription only) over the counter but if you are getting them that regularly, then it's def worth going to the GP

log onto the migraine association website - they have loads of useful info

I get imigran nasal spray from the doctor. It is fab!

If you are geting them weekly your doc might want to put you on somehting to stop them happening in the first place.

Hope you get it dorted out.

ilovecaboose · 21/09/2006 11:46

That is a point actually (sorry was looking for an excuse to use that emoticon)

Whatever medication you take can lose its affects if you use it regularly.

Have you tried syndol (painkiller and muscle relaxant)

Asprin and Co-codamol (take together)

Nurofen.

All over counter stuff.

thanks everyone. I will go to doc and see if he can prescribe anything more effective. Thanks for link to migrane association.

I don't know what my triggers are...possibly cheese/tension/tiredness...??

Keep diary of everything - things you eat/drink, when you ate drink, how you felt - hungry/thirsty/tired/stressed, your period cycle, any strange smells - basically everything you can think of to see if you can find a pattern. That'll show you what your triggers are.

Dr will probably ask you to do this anyway.

Imigran and Maxalt.Maxalt melt on your tongue and are great if you take 'em when you feel one coming on.I live in Ireland now and use Imigram tabs which are also effective. The side affects can include weakness and you can feel abit fragile but they get rid of the migraine!
Best to get something that dissolves fast as[i am sure you know]the digestive system is compromised during migraine.
There are preventative tabs that can be taken too. These may break the cycle.
Talk to your gp and best of luck. One a week is dreadful.

doobydoo · 21/09/2006 19:18

Finding triggers can be tricky.Too much sleep, not enough sleep.Cheese, choc, wine, fruit, stress, hormones or a combination of the above when there is a full moon.
Still not sure what mine are.
I am now 11 weeks pregnant and have stopped eating choc, cheese, drinking, caffeine, smoking etc and still get 'em.

Astrophe · 21/09/2006 19:38

I read somewhere that most migraine treatments only work for about 30% of sufferers, so if its not working I would try something else. I just use codeine and paracetamol, plus syndol if its dreadful. 'lucky' for me I get the 'aura' before the pain, so I get a warning and take the drugs quick smart!

My triggers and soft cheese, oranges, too mcuh caffine and carrying heavy bags etc over my shoulders or round my neck...also early pregnancy and after giving birth...and sometimes for not reason at all!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

desperatehousewife · 25/09/2006 19:51

I have been prescribed Sanomigran to take every night to prevent migrane and Paramax incase I get an attack. The sanoigran says avoid alcohol...Hmmmm....bummer.

Thanks for advice everyone.

I have never been diagnosed as having migraines. And in fact until last week hadnt had one for years, but get all the classic symtoms. I have been off prescribed meds since Easter but was so close to takin something last week as my headached was debilitating. But I rang the homeopath and she gave me 2 different remedies, which I took, and it did the trick.

desperatehousewife · 25/09/2006 20:37

what are the homeopathic remedies then?

My sister was referred to a migrane clinic in London. Perhaps you should try and get a referral. I'll have to check exactly what they advised but she definetely used a bracelet. Will find out the details and let you know. They also looked at her workspace and made it healthier for her.

desperatehousewife · 25/09/2006 20:42

ah thanks. sadly not much can be done about my 'workspace' - home...!
