ok, i need some advice, im a bit scared!
had a filling a few months ago, at the time the dentist said it was very close to the nerve and may need root canal. at the time it was ok.
fast forward a few months and it started to get sensitive to cold. went back she said, course of anti bs and it might be ok.
those done nothing and i was in agony.
so she said root canal.
just went in and she started doing it, and even with anastethic(sp?) i could still feel when she hit the nerve.
so she has packed it with something and i have to go back in about 10 days.
now im petrified that when i go back its gonna hurt still.
is it normal that there was pain? should the jabs have been able to numb it? is it normal to have to do this packing thing to kill off the rest of the nerve?
im scared!

Oh, and in comparison with rest of mouth, I can brush all over and right to the end on all the other 3 sides, and nothing feels wrong. If I brush around or on here, it is sensitive like an intense ache.

I have been trying to rub toothpaste into it at night to see if that helps.

I think it could well be a chronic abcess. The dentist would need to run some tests and take an X-ray to confirm.

Often, but not always there is some pain in the tooth some time between the filling being placed, and the lump forming.

thicksolidtight · 13/09/2014 14:51

Oh that makes sense, as I had to go because the toothache one morning was horrendously bad, a few weeks after the filling, but before the lump. The dentist was not my normal one, and just said brush better, and advised Corsydol. The pain went, so thought no more of it.

Will it be alright to wait a few weeks til my appointment (first week of Oct)? Is there anything I could try in the meantime?

Is it likely I would lose the tooth?

Yes fine to wait, if you get toothache take some painkillers and make an emergency appointment.

Unlikely to lose the tooth at this stage. It will most likely need a root canal, but that's usually pretty straight forward on a canine. You may find that a) the lump takes a long time to resolve, if ever, and b) that the tooth darkens a little over time. If this happens it can be bleached from the inside, though canines are very thick, and the internal bleaching may not be as effective of them as on other teeth.

Thank you very much, you have really helped me to tone the worry down.

I might try and go a bit sooner. As long as it isn't anything more sinister, I could get quite fond of my little lump Smile

Just to confirm tho it isn't the canine but the second tooth back from it, that I have the filling in, and the lump is on the gum just above.

In which case it's extra important to get an X-ray. Because although we assume the abcess is from the tooth that was last filled, it could be in one of the adjacent ones, purely coincidentally. And you don't want the wrong tooth treated!

Brilliant, thank you. Now I can go armed with knowledge :)

Ahh bonzo77 I wish you were my dentist, I read this thread as I have the dentist on tuesday and have one broken tooth and one filled one that gets sore now and then, I am petrified, ive not slept in days!! You come over so calm and confident and reassuring, I wish there were more like you!

AlisonC48 · 05/10/2014 16:17

Claimedbyme. Am also wishing bonzo77 was a dentist I could visit. I am terrified of them!!!
I need new implants, on tax credits, so exempt with NHS. Even yhen have to pay toward implants, which I was quoted as 200 just for one. Nearest dentist to me was NHS, but no longer taking anymore on, so if I want to go there, would have to be private, which means triple the price I expect!!! In hopeless situation Shock
