2 day old baby question.

My 2 day old dd began feeding from the breast at 10 to 7 this morning and fed till 11.30, when she took a formula top up of 40mls and we were discharged from hospital. Since then she has done nothing but sleep, we managed to wake her at about 6 when she fed slowly for about 20 mins. She's pretty much unwakable at the mo and we're begining to get worried. My milk has only just come in so her feeding frenzy this morning was just colostrum. Should we be ringing the hospital back or is this normal?
TIA

Why did she get a formula top up? What have you tried to wake her up?

CountTo10 · 20/09/2006 22:17

i would say this is normal - how was lo delivered? My friends lo took a week or two until he stopped sleeping all the time!! If you are worried and would like some reassurance, give your labour ward a call.

TitianRed · 20/09/2006 22:18

Normal! Some newborns can sleep for England. Mention it to your midwife tomorrow or give the midwives' station at the hospital a bell now to put yur mind at rest. Good luck! x

I would hesitate to say this is normal, just one feed in the last 11 hours???

LIZS · 20/09/2006 22:19

Could she be jaundiced , assisted delivery perhaps ? Could make her more sleepy if so. Try to make sure she is fed at elast every 3 hours and if neds be strip her to nappy and change it to wake her.

emkana · 20/09/2006 22:20

I would do as LIZS says - change her nappy and see if you can get her to wake and have a good feed that way, if she doesn't feed within the next couple of hours I would definitely phone the hospital.

calvemjoe · 20/09/2006 22:23

She got the top up cause she was screaming every time we took her away from the breast and my nipples are very sore. We've stripped her and changed her nappy along with tickling, poking, talking to etc. She was an emergency section but has been feeding really well since birth, for 8 hours non stop yesterday, and was slept for 3 hours after a top up yesterday, but she just seems to be so uninterested.

Both of mine have done this within the first 2 days of being born. However as you are concerned I would call the hospital or your mw community team and ask them for advice. Labour is a tough job for your little one as well as you which can exhaust them, thats what my mw told me when I had ds.

calvemjoe · 20/09/2006 22:24

Sorry about the grammer, not at my best at the mo!

Would being cold make her sleepy as a newborn? I'm concerned she's cold because it was so warm in the hospital and it's a bit chilly in the house.

My friend that I mentioned earlier had a c section which is why I asked. As has already mention labour is a massive deal for babbie as well as for mum so it could just be a recovery thing. My friends little one certainly did not start feeding properly for a few days and she was giving formula here and there whilst her milk supply adjusted and he got to grips with it. Try not to worry but do call for reassurance if it will help you to relax. Re the chilly thing, a babygro and vest should be fine and maybe some scratch mits. Maybe a thin blanket or a sheet if you do think they're called. Don't be tempted to over do it with the blankets and stuff though as they can over heat.

Anyway - congratulations and hope the coming weeks are fantastic for you all, it's a great time

calvemjoe · 20/09/2006 22:34

Thanks, I'm so worried and my boobs are throbbing, my body's saying 'your baby needs to be fed' and she's just fast asleep.

emkana · 20/09/2006 22:36

Guys, I'm really surprised that you all think this is absolutely fine.

One feed in nearly 12 hours is definitely not enough.

calvemjoe, please do phone the hospital.#
Maybe I'm overreacting, but better safe than sorry.

tortoiseshell · 20/09/2006 22:38

Agree with emkana - please phone your mw - I'm sure she will pop around and check you and the baby. If the baby's cold, that can sometimes be a sign they need to feed, and sometimes they just haven't enough energy to wake for a feed. A newborn should be feeding every 2-3 hours. How are the nappies? They should be wet. Your mw really won't mind being phoned, but 12 hours is too long with only 1 feed.

LIZS · 20/09/2006 22:39

As I understood it Demand Feeding is a 2 way process - if you feel the need to feed, try again. She sounds sleepy but even a little and often may rouse her sufficiently to feed better. It doesn't sound right that she has fed so little over such a long period.

Other tactics you could try to wake her up (I had a VERY sleepy feeder in my ds1) are to keep tickling her feet once she's feeding, blowing on her face, take all her clothes off, feed her naked (you as well!) to get lots of skin to skin. Once she's naked, putting her on the changing mat might wake her up a bit - we used to do that to ds1 in the middle of a feed. Also changing her nappy, putting cold water on her face.

Hope things resolve themselves!

She has fed for about 5 mins and has now gone back to sleep. We're gonna give her an hour for that to kick in and I'm sure she'll perk up a bit and keep us awake all night! Thanks for your advice.

Good that she has fed, but still not very much. Keep a good eye on her through the night please.
I would make sure that she gets woken up/fed again in two hours time.

lisalisa
This has me worried too.
If she was mine I would get in touch with the hospital again as well.
