Wet Chesty Cough?

DS1 is nearly 5. He has had a really chesty cough for a few weeks now (well, certainly more than one week). It sometimes wakes him, he once thought he was going to throw up from it.

He is generally well, otherwise. He's eating, sleeping, not feverish, and doing ok.

Do I need to see a doc? Is it worth giving him some sort of OTC meds?

is he coughing anything up? is it clear, green, yellow? if his sputum is anything but clear i would go and see your doc. tbh i don't think otc meds do much to help get rid of the cough but could sooth a sore throat for a few mins!

You aren't always feverish with a chest infection NQC, so it is possible that's what he has.
I'd get his chest listened to by the doc, just to rule that out.
I never bother with OTC meds for coughs I have to say but I cut dairy down temporarily if there is mucus a gogo, as I have noticed the snot clears quicker.
Scabs and coughs eh? Don't you just love the return to school?
A friend's ds got impetigo and nits within a week, mmhhmmm.

that wet cough seems to be doing the rounds - if he doesn't seem ill with it, I wouldn't bother taking him to the doctor yet. Think we have had it now for a couple of weeks but it seems to be on the way out (along with ds vomiting up mucus because of the cough!). If his nose is blocked as well, you could try some medised for the decongestant.

It is FIS. We had it in August and dh and ds toughed it out in the end, but looking back on it I know for a fact that dh's turned into a chest infection.

Hmm, I'll probably hold out for a bit. Yeah, I'm dubious about otc meds, I think some can suppress coughs, but if his chest is full of ick, he should be coughing!

I haven't seen what he's coughing up, will ask to see it.

DS2's scab (for those of you keeping score at home) is looking more "normal" to me now - it's raised, and a bit of it has disappeared, so I've stopped worrying about it. And the scab itself looks kinda yellow, so the kind of injury that happens without bleeding, maybe?

What is impetigo? Is that a skin thing?

Someone this morning asked me for the english translation of "jaksd hadsh fksadjfkl" (well, that's what it sounded like), which I think was a sty. Another childhood problem I don't even know what it is.

if you are worried about him (chesty one) get it checked out - but would in the meantime just keep an eye out for it turning into an infection (temp) or affecting his breathing

what happened with ds2? impetigo is it?

NotQuiteCockney · 19/09/2006 11:44

No, don't think so. He has a scab on his scalp, which weirded me out, as it was in a funny place, looked funny, and because I thought it had been there for ages. Have been watching it more now, and it looks like a normal scab really.

DS1 seems to be breathing fine, is running about as normal and is generally himself. (Bit hyper about his birthday, and slightly inclined to tantrum ... don't think chest infection causes those, though?)
