no. they wouldn't want to be kept off.

hermykne · 18/09/2006 15:43

unless an antibiotic is called for, you could keep them off and then when they go back 3 other kids would have a snotty runny nose so you're fighting a losing battle. unless the nursery say no . i told mine last week dd had diarheoa and to ring me if anything happended but nothing did and they were fine with htat.

if you have 30 children in a building at this time of year how many will either be finishing, starting or in the middle of a cold?

HuwEdwards · 18/09/2006 15:45

not unless they have a high temp or feel very poorly. The nursery has a very strict process for contagious infections, but colds don't figure - thank god.

GeorginaA · 18/09/2006 15:47

No - if I did that there'd be whole months in the winter where they'd never attend...

If they have a high temperature with it or aren't coping very well with it then I do keep them off, though.

madmarchhare · 18/09/2006 15:48

DS has just started at nursery so Im interested to see what everyone has to say on this. I would have said that I wouldnt.

bluejelly · 18/09/2006 15:55

No not unless it's a hideous cough/cold which has kept them (and me) up half the night!
Generally only keep her off if she has a temp or something else a bit more serious (eg earache)

IdrisTheDragon · 18/09/2006 15:58

If I didn't send DS and DD to nursery when they had a cold, I'm not sure if they'd have been there much at all (and I probably wouldn't have a job due to never being there either)

lemonaid · 18/09/2006 15:58

If it's a bad cold (high temp / earache as well / obviously not feeling at all well) then I keep him off, but not for a bit of a sniffly cold or cough.

PrettyCandles · 18/09/2006 16:04

Certainly not! If they had a temperature or were too ill to function, then yes I'd keep them off. But not just for a cold, no matter how snotty or coughy.

SSSandy · 18/09/2006 16:09

I didn't at nursery. They recover faster at home and you're not doing the other kids a favour. At school, I have kept her off if she had a bad night and is obviously tired, what's the point in going to school then? However, I won't keep her off school as often as I kept her away from nursery since I don't want her to lag behind.

SpaceCadet · 18/09/2006 16:10

no, only if they were obviously very unwell with it.

Pinotmum · 18/09/2006 16:17

No, not for just a cold i.e runny nose but if they were tired or lethargic or upset I'd keep them off. I work in a pre-school and it has been known for rather poorly children to be dropped off when they should really be at home.

Twiglett · 18/09/2006 16:18

no

why?

hulababy · 18/09/2006 16:30

I wouldn't, unless my DD was feeling so bad I didn't feel she was able to cope with the day at school. Otherwise she goes in, unless she can't because of school rules.

Flamesparrow · 18/09/2006 16:31

Only if they are ill with it iyswim (dd kept sleeping she never sleeps!)
