My gp thinks my breast lump is a cyst - Im 47 so prime age for this. Consequently I have been refereed for a routine mammogram with a 4 week wait. What if she is wrong about it being a cyst? I am trying not to panic but unwanted thoughts keep creeping in. she couldn't be 100% sure hence the referral. Is the month long wait going to be of huge significance if I have a malignant tumour?

I don't think so, I found out I had breast cancer and then has to wait 4 weeks for an op to remove it. They said the wait wouldn't make any difference. Hopefully yours is just a cyst.

kissmyheathenass · 11/08/2014 15:33

Hi malteserzz, thanks for your reply, its reassuring to read in your experience a 4 week wait made no difference. I assumed as most referrals were seen within 2 weeks, there was a chance any cancer would spread rapidly.

I hope the gp is right about it being a cyst but there are a few ladies on the tamoxi threads who have had 'cysts' which turn out to be cancers.

kiss, in my experience GP's don't hang around if they have any suspicions it's cancer, so I'd say your GP's mighty confident it's a cyst. The fact you're not being referred to the breast clinic straight away is I'd say a v.positive sign. Smile

Hi Smee, thanks for your reassurance, it helps Smile. I have decided to go for a private assessment (booked for tomorrow) as I couldn't bear to wait another 4 weeks. Despite my gp's lack of concern, I am absolutely bricking it and need answers fast! We are on holiday next week and I want to (hopefully) be able to relax and enjoy it without wondering if it will be my last family holiday. I first went to the gp about the lump a month ago so it has been on my mind since then. Another month without knowing is unbearable.

Hi Kiss, just wanted to let you know, I'm just 50 and in the last 5 years I've had quite a few cysts. They're very common around peri menopause apparently. I'm sure all will be fine but totally understand that you want to be seen asap, so did I. Good luck for tomorrow... well today now Wink

kissmyheathenass · 13/08/2014 13:52

Thank you Smile I am sitting here trying to convince myself its a cyst given my age and my gp's diagnosis. But I am still so scared I feel ill . Appt 4pm so hopefully by this evening I will be reassured.

Thinking of you, Kiss. Hope you skip back with cyst shaped news. x

LightastheBreeze · 13/08/2014 14:16

Good luck, I had a cyst when i was in my late 40s. I went to the GP and I was very lucky as he drained it there and then and then sent the fluid off for analysis. I'm sure it all depends on the GP what they do, I was very lucky he done it and I didn't have to wait for a referral.

You are best to go before your holiday, else you won't be able to stop worrying. I was worried just waiting for the GP appointment.

Handsup · 13/08/2014 20:05

May I ask the ladies who had the cysts what they felt like? I also have a lump and have a scheduled appointment with the breast clinic. I'm hoping it's a cyst Sad

LEMmingaround · 13/08/2014 20:17

Hoping you received good news today op.

I had a cyst following an injury. It felt hard and smooth. Would move if I pushed it but not "mobile". My gp originally said come back if not gone down in a week or so. (She thought it was a haematoma) but I went back the next day and insisted ona referral. Was seen within a week.

Was climbing the walls but the people at breast clinic were wonderful. I had mammogram and ultrasound they said cyst and drained it. I had to go back as it was still there but they said it was fat necrosis due to injury and it would gradually go. It is going. I have to go back for a check up but they are happy its not sinister.its practically gone now.

LightastheBreeze · 13/08/2014 21:10

Cyst was quite biggish very smooth and fairly firm it moved a bit but I think that was thee fluid moving inside. GP stuck a syringe in it and drew of yellowish liquid and it was gone

OP I hope you had good news

kissmyheathenass · 14/08/2014 10:46

Hi, I have lumpy breasts! But nothing sinister. Smile Very, VERY relieved.

I had a appointment with the consultant who had a good prod and feel then reassured me that he couldn't feel anything suspicious just general lumpiness Confused , then I had a mammogram which really didn't hurt, maybe slightly uncomfortable for a few moments, that's all. 10 minutes later I was reassured that there was nothing at all to worry about.

Handsup, I can sympathise with the awfulness of waiting for an assessment. Horrid. I didn't have one specific cyst but I have lots of lumpy bits mainly concentrated in one area. One lump seemed bigger and this is what worried me. It was grape size, smooth, firm but not hard like a stone. Let us know how you get on with your appointment. When is it? Good luck.

Next week. I've always had lumpy breasts but this is bigger and firmer then the others although mobile. The waiting is awful while I prod and push the thing day and night - I think of nothing else.. Sad

LEMmingaround · 14/08/2014 13:10

Phew -have been checking on thread. Now go and enjoy your holiday [phew]

LEMmingaround · 14/08/2014 13:10

That was meant to be Flowers

LightastheBreeze · 14/08/2014 18:01

What a relief Kiss, Enjoy your holiday. Smile

Handsup Hopefully its just a cyst. My cyst was firm and smooth like a plum or grape only not as round, a lot shallower so although you could see it when I lay down it was more like a mound and not that noticeable though it felt big.

kissmyheathenass · 15/08/2014 10:22

Thank you for lovely messages, makes me feel warm and fuzzy Smile. I shall pack my lumpy self into a bikini and enjoy my holiday!

Handsup, you sound very similar to me - general lumpiness with one bigger and firmer lump. I was prodding my lump all day and night too which just made it sore! I know it's impossible to block it from your mind but do remember statistically its likely to be nothing to worry about. How old are you? Each age seems to bring it's own reasons for increased lumpiness.
