2.10 yr olds temperature sky high. Any Advice????

DS woke last night at about 11.30. He had vomited quite heavily and was deliriuous. His temperature was 102F. He vomited about 10 minutes later. We gave him Nurofen and Paralink to help bring down the temp. and it worked. When he woke this morning his temperature was down and he ate breakfast.

By lunchtme it was up sky high again. Took him to Dr. Checked for Meningitis as has rash on back and was complaining of a sore neck. We got the all clear for meng. thank goodness. He is now on Penicillin for a bug?!

We are following the timings for dosing Nurofen and Calpol to keep temp down but after about 4 hours Nurofen wears off and Calpol has no effect. Our only option is Paralink.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed we can keep his temperature under control but what do we do if it doesn't go down? At what stage do you decide to go to emergency Dr/hospital?

Dr. today told us we had done the right thing going to him as the hospital would have done a lumber pucture, taken bloods etc and this would have been very traumatic and all for nothing.

We have been spongeing him down but all he wanted to do was sleep.

Hi .. its obvious you're worried but really 38.9 (102) is not so high for a toddler fighting a bug .. try not to worry

strip him off

keep dosing him with nurofen / calpol

lukewarm bath might help .. a fan if you have one

I would only head to hospital if he had a temp approaching 40 (ie above 39.9) and the nurofen DIDN'T bring it down at all

Trust your gut feelings. My dd2 has had a lumbar puncture and bloods and whilst it wasn't nice she was so sleepy that she slept through the worst of it. We had peace of mind, and the hospital actually kept us in for three days as she was so unwell even though it was 'just' a virus. She was 2, as well. If you are really worried, go to a&e.

agree with nearly3 ... you DO know him best and should trust your instincts

is his rash blanching?

Emskilou · 17/09/2006 20:41

I agree with nearly3 aswel, even if it is just for reassurance, better to be safe. Hope he gets better soon

dinny · 17/09/2006 20:44

if you're worried, then get a second opinion, Reece. it's so scary when they are poorly, isn't it? hopefully he'll have a better night tonight(how old is he btw?)

Reece · 17/09/2006 21:00

Thanks everyone. I have just been up to check him and temp. is still 102. He had Nurofen an hour ago but it hasn't taken effect. Does anyone know how soon it should work?

I have him stripped down to nappy and vest, no sheets or blankets.

Thanks for your reassurance nearlythree re: your hospital experience.

I am comfortable enough at the moment to keep checking him and if no change in temperature in another half hour will give him a Paralink suppository. Hopefully it will help and also not wake him up. I thought about a bath but he would more than likely have a blue fit and make his temperature rise even more.

The Dr. didn't seem too concerned with his rash. It does disappear momentarily when pressed. Is that blanching???

Thanks dinny.

yes, that is blanching - sounds viral. how is he this morning?

ps do remember that a temerature means his immune system is doing its job, scary though ut can seem. Dinny x

Thanks Kama. I am sure we all worry when our lo's are under the weather. You always hear stories of children going into a & e with a temperature and ending up in hospital for a week or surgery. I have heard a lot of these lately. Some of my friends have not had much luck with health and children, poor things.

Thanks dinny for your concern. He woke at around 4am asking for a drink. His temperature was ok but by 6am it was climbing again. In went the Nurofen and he woke again at 9.30am. So pleased he managed a fairly good nights sleep. His temp. was down when he first woke but due to give Calpol again soon as it is climbing again. Must be a nasty bug. Hopefully he will be better by tomorrow. Iv'e kept him out of Montessori today. They informed me that another little boy had it on Friday so there's the source anyway. Don't want to be spreading it around to other poor little mites. These things are bound to happen. I suppose it builds up their defence system for the future.
