Have you done the salt water thing?

StitchtheCrafter · 17/09/2006 20:24

steam inhalation
tie a scarf round your forehaed really tight
vicks inhaly thing

jalopy · 17/09/2006 20:29

This might help:
Drink plenty of fluids
Avoid alcohol (very dehydrating)
Avoid chocolate and diary products
Hot steam inhalations - Karvol or salt
Nurofen for pain
Chewing gum can help (honest)
Dont blow your nose to hard because you can worsen the situation in the sinuses.
If you are really unwell with temp, loss of taste and smell, you might need antibiotics to knock it on the head.

lean forward. a dentist told my husband that sinuses are prehistoric and better suited to when we walked on all fours, so that's how they drain best. (a dentist? i know... but it works.) i like to massage my eye sockets and nose as well. good luck, sinusitis is rotten.

Beauregard · 17/09/2006 20:30

Jabberwocky-i take it you mean the sniff it up thing, will try in a minute

Stitch-Are you serious about the scarf?

jabberwocky · 17/09/2006 20:31

Yep, I hate doing it, but it really does work most of the time. Just make sure you don't get the salt water too concentrated - that burns!

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 17/09/2006 20:31

whats the salt thing?

Beauregard · 17/09/2006 20:33

Thanks will try the suggestions [fingers crossed]
not sure if it is sinusitus as dd1 has it too.

Drink plenty.
Saline drops up the nose.

massage:

Probably best if you google but basically massage along and just under the cheekbones, outwards in. Make circular movements in the dips either side of the bridge of your nose. Massage the dips up and under the inner corner of your brows. Place fingertips either side of the outside of your nostrils and massage in circular movements.

Beauregard · 17/09/2006 20:34

How much salt would you put in a glass then jabberwocky?

OP posts:
Pastarito · 17/09/2006 20:51

I have these little bottles of saline I buy in Italy that you squirt up your nose. They work really well.

Beauregard · 17/09/2006 21:00

Fillyjonk-sorry ,the salt thing is when you snort some salt water up it is supposed to clear your nose.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 17/09/2006 21:20

Beauregard · 17/09/2006 21:25

fillyjonk - yes it does help

pelvicfloornomore I utterly sympathise as I get terrible sinusitis

cod recommended menthol crystals - you pu them in hot water and inhale - BE CAREFUL THEY CAN BLOW YOER HEAD OFF

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 17/09/2006 21:43

oh dear, you don't want that...

Northerner · 17/09/2006 21:49

I sympathise, I'm sitting here now and I can feel my sinus's throbbing. Funny thing is though don't you use steam/salt inhalation to clear a blocked nose? I can have very pianful sinus's but a clear nose. Does that make sense? I get a tingly, painful face, eyes hurt to move them. The massage thing works for me but only when doing it, useless as soon as I stop!

BonyM · 17/09/2006 21:54

Know it won't help you tonight, but Otrivine nasal spray is brilliant - only thing that enabled me to get any sleep last time my sinuses were blocked.

jabberwocky · 17/09/2006 22:15

I'm probably too late to answer this, but tbh it's always a trial and error thing for me as to how much salt. I can usually tell with a little taste test if it's ok. Sorry I can't quantify it anymore for you.

orangegiraffe · 17/09/2006 22:16

Haven't read all the thread but have you got a facial steamer?

jabberwocky · 18/09/2006 01:52

I've been running a humidfier in ds's room this past week with eucalyptus oil. It does seem to make him more comfortable. We've all had terrible colds
