I think runny yellow poo is normal in a bf baby - after all, she's not got a lot of solids in he diet, does she?

If she's fine in herself, nothing to worry about, although it is a hassle.

LIZS · 17/09/2006 19:14

Sounds normal. Perhaps she has upped her intake or going less frequently so there is more to come out ! Exploding nappies fairly typical of b'fed baby ime! Take extra clothes when you go out as it goes everywhere.

Olivo, don't cut yourself up about the wine, if you wait at least 4 hours after a glass of wine to bf it should be fine (obviously not advisable to drink ). But this was some advise from a doctor to me. He jokingly added 2 glasses makes them sleep better!

The poo things sounds fine to me too, if however, she gets worse and have loads of runny nappies in one day you should definately have it looked at as they can get very sick very quickly.

Good Luck!

um, what if it was only an hour and a half after a glass of wine?

The 4 hours are just to make sure your milk doesn't taste of wine, apparently they do not like that very much. But if she was fine taking it I wouldn't worry. I'll check if I can find more info about the wine issue.

I like having a glass of wine during the evening feed .

If she has fever then take her to the doctor. Otherwise runny poo is normal. My ds2 had gastroenteritis at 5 weeks and had to spend a week in hospital, but it presented with a fever and he wasn't eating or sleeping normally.

Ahhh Found it:

From the babycentre site:

Will it harm my breastfeeding baby if I drink wine, beer, or spirits?
That depends on how much and when you drink the alcoholic beverage. Your blood alcohol levels (and the level of alcohol in your milk) will generally be highest one to one and a half hours after your last drink, although that time ? and the length of time it takes the alcohol to dissipate from your body ? varies from person to person.

The occasional glass of wine or celebratory cocktail doesn't appear to harm a nursing baby or interfere with milk production in the long run. One study found that babies who are exposed regularly (at least daily) to alcohol in their mother's milk during the first three months of life might have a slight but significant slowing of motor development, although another study found no such effect.

Studies do show that a baby drinks less milk if her mother has recently drunk alcohol. And drinking large amounts may make your baby drowsy or sluggish, which could interfere with her sucking ability. Drinking as little as one drink may also affect your milk letdown reflex (your breasts' natural ability to produce milk). And heavy drinking may impair your ability to care for your child. One study also found that babies slept for significantly shorter periods of time in a three and a half hour period after nursing if their mothers had had an alcoholic beverage.

If you're going to enjoy an occasional alcoholic beverage or have more than one drink, wait at least two hours per drink before nursing your baby to give the alcohol a chance to dissipate. One drink is considered 4 ounces of wine, one beer, or one mixed drink. Alcohol isn't stored in breast milk, so "pumping and dumping" (using a breast pump to empty your breasts and then throwing out the collected milk) serves no purpose. And be sure to down a nonalcoholic drink for every cocktail you quaff, to ward off dehydration.

I used to drink a glass of wine with supper and just expressed the milk after an hour or so and actually threw it away, your body replenish your milk supply within an hour, so you can bf safely again.

NotQuiteCockney · 17/09/2006 19:42

Um, there's no need to ever express and throw it away. Your body will remove the alcohol from the milk in your breasts, while it's removing the alcohol from your blood.

3littlefrogs · 17/09/2006 20:28

Oh dear - sorry to contradict, but everything you absorb comes through in the breast milk, to varying degrees - that is how breast milk is made. The time it remains in the milk will vary, depending on how long it takes the liver to break it down, and the kidneys to excrete. That is why it is so important to be careful about medicines, pain killers etc when you are breast feeding. An alcoholic drink doesn't usually cause any problems, sometimes makes the baby sleep better, but occasionally it may disagree with the little digestive system. not dangerous unless you are drinking huge amounts.
