Feeling embarrassed post surgery

I had a general anaesthetic for a minor procedure yesterday. I've had a phobia to all things medical for as long as I can remember and was crying and panicking by the time I was in the waiting area.

During the anaesthetic I was hysterical. Crying, heart pounding. I didn't resist the cannula being inserted, nor was I aggressive. Operation went very well, woke up with no problems and was quickly discharged.

Today however I feel so embarrassed about it all. I didn't mean to behave in such a manner but I've not felt panic like that in all my life. I'm not sure what scares me exactly.

Don't know why I'm posting, I suppose to see if I'm the only crazy adult who behaves like that?!

How embarrassing :(

I'm pretty sure they've seen it all before! Don't worry.

We have seen everything, nobody will have judged you I promise. There is nothing to be embarrassed about.

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2014 17:08

Stop beating yourself up. I think people all react differently. i always come round like I am really drunk and burbling nonsense. Grin

I agree that they have seen it all before and you won't be the first or the last.

Hope you are ok and recovering. Wine (if you are allowed)

Thank you for kind replies! I think I might investigate hypnotherapy if I need any further treatment Blush

I wouldn't worry, I'm sure they have seen it all before. I cry and shake at the dentist Grin

SauvignonBlanche · 08/08/2014 20:03

It's not uncommon at all.

Matildathecat · 08/08/2014 20:11

I'm sure they felt nothing but concern at the time and have probably forgotten it by now because it's really not uncommon.

You get on with recovering.

I was the same, cried from the minute in arrived, so anxious.they were all really lovely, didn't seem to mind at all.

Don't worry, and get well soon.

I cried like a baby when I last had an op. The staff were lovely and told me that if they had £1 for everyone who was like that they would be rich!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/08/2014 16:54

I went into theatre in tears last op I had, they've seen it all before! I'm surprised they didn't offer you something to calm you down though.

My niece is a theatre nurse and honestly patients crying are the least of her worries when she talks about her day x

I had my tonsils out when I was about 15. The middle aged lady in the bed opposite me had had total hysterics before her op and walked out of the anaesthetic room. They eventually persuaded her to go back down the next day. Don't worry, they've seen worse!

Another plus one for pre-op freakout here - I was in the first trimester of pregnancy and needed emergency surgery on an abscess. I was convinced I wouldn't have a GA because I was pregnant, and only found out that was what they were planning when they wheeled me into the pre-op room.

I then freaked out a bit - there were tears and a lot of shaking as I was petrified.

When I came round I sobbed and sobbed for about an hour. Apparently this is a fairly normal reaction as they literally didn't bat an eyelid. Just there-there'd me a bit and carried on!

I, like PP, am so terrified of the dentist that I cry at the thought of making an appointment and therefore still don't have a dentist

Don't feel embarrassed. I actually think it's a natural reaction to Scary Shit About To Happen. (And being put under is definitely scary, no matter how minor the op).

MonsterThighs · 12/08/2014 00:28

So nice to feel 'normal' I just wish I could have medical procedures done (no matter how minor!) without the anxiety.
